Amazon.co.uk Review
Enterprise JavaBeans (EJBs) are complex, but in
Instant Enterprise JavaBeans Paul Tremblett makes no assumptions. You begin by writing a "Hello World" EJB and follow with a client to call it. In doing this Tremblett introduces the J2EE server, the Deployment Tool (which does a lot of the scut work for you) and introduces the main concepts of creating an EJB, adding it to an application and calling it from a client. He then goes on to show how to update it and redeploy it.
This detailed, hands-on approach continues throughout Instant Enterprise JavaBeans with demonstration applications showing how to create and deploy stateful and stateless entity and session beans in a variety of business situations. He shows you how to use the standard APIs of EJB containers regardless of environment and how to use EJB container features rather than constantly reinvent the wheel. For example, how to use EJBs with SQL servers without writing any SQL. Neat.
The included CD contains all the Java code used in the book along with NT batch files for those who want to compile the examples, but not the J2EE itself which you'll have to download from Sun. Overall, probably the most accessible introduction to programming EJBs we've seen. Recommended. --Steve Patient
