Amazon.co.uk Review
Another monster tome slides off the Oracle Press to shed light on one more area for Oracle developers. The overall impression is not one of incandescent brilliance, sadly, but more of a steady stream of daylight. It's all so very serious in there.
In four parts followed by a set of appendices, Oracle8i: Java Component Programming with EJB, CORBA and JSP gives comprehensive cover to a complex area: the contents list alone runs to eight pages. The book is about developing Java components for use on the client and server side of systems with emphasis very much on the use of components as elements that can be combined in many ways in different applications. This "Write Once, Use Many" method of working has grown popular as applications become ever larger and more complicated and required on increasingly shorter timescales; development time is reduced by the re-use of components and already huge libraries of existing components can be found in the wild.
The tone verges on the dictatorial with "In this chapter, you will consider..." and lots of "You will learn"s. The difference in tone between "will" and "can" can be something of a watershed in determining whether the reader follows willingly or puts the book down. It's also heavy reading: "A component approach to software development builds upon fundamental constructs of object-oriented paradigms". Humour is rare and rays of unintentional humour are welcome: "The application assembler gathers one or more Beans" sounds like a horticultural interlude.
There is lots of information here and lots of code (also on the CD-ROM) but you will need a full measure of determination to get the best from it. --Mark Whitehorn
