Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Though it doesn't tell how to prepare petit fours with FrontPage 2000 or how to use the Web-development environment to fight evil, How to Do Everything With FrontPage 2000 does a good job of explaining how to use it to do some pretty clever feats of design and organisation. Carefully structured and effectively illustrated, this book assumes neither too much nor too little about your background in planning and constructing sets of pages. Early chapters explain how to do fundamental stuff, like add dividing horizontal lines to your pages, while later chapters (making up the bulk of the book) dig into FrontPage's more advanced features, such as form validation and site traffic analysis.

Sometimes the book falls into the trap of letting FrontPage's user interface dictate its structure, but it's quick to reveal normally obscure yet useful information. How to use e-mail to carry a Web form's contents, using the contents of one of the form's fields as the e-mail message's subject line, is one example of this. It also tends--unlike many similar books--to suggest the best way to do something, rather than merely listing all the possibilities. It's a helpful approach. --David Wall, Amazon.com

Topics covered:

  • How to insert and style text and images
  • Jazzing up your pages with tables, frames, forms, and Dynamic HTML (DHTML)
  • The server-side capabilities of FrontPage 2000 via form handling, database connectivity, and usage reporting

5.0 out of 5 stars A very comprehensive and detailed guide to FrontPage 2000, 6 Jan 2002
By A Customer
The book is a very comprehensive and detailed guide to FrontPage 2000. It contains all the additional information that I have needed to create my websites. Sometimes however the book is a bit too technical and difficult to understand. I feel that although the book goes through nearly every possible function in FrontPage 2000 in great detail, some previous operating knowledge of FrontPage 2000 is needed to benefit fully from the book. I have definitely improved my websites with some of the knowledge gained through reading this book and I would consider it good value for money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't Live Without It!, 10 Aug 2002
By A Customer
Until I bought this book I didn't realise the scope that frontpage 2000 offers. This is a well written volume that really does live up to its title. For beginner or intermidate user, it provides a wealth of information that you just cannot afford to be without. Highly recommended

2.0 out of 5 stars A Disappointment, 4 Jan 2009

(REAL NAME)
I was disappointed with this book. It's been out for several years now and I suppose it's optimistic to expect otherwise but the book leans heavily on examples on Plotkin's website and unfortunately the website no longer exists.

I've been using Frontpage 2000 for about 3 years to publish a church website -using trial and error and the FP2000 Help File. I'd hoped that having this book would bring a new dimension to my website but I can't say that it's told me much I didn't know already.

The subject of Macros is one topic which I'd hoped the book would help with, - they're clearly a part of FP2000 under Tools/Macro and are covered, albeit inadequately in the FP Help File. Unfortunately the word doesn't even seem to crop up in the book, -not even to say that macros are outside the scope of the book, -I thought this was a bit of a cop out.

Then there are tags, these are covered in the FP2000 help file but not even referred to in the book.

It's a fairly hefty tome but I felt that it was little more than a printed version of the FP2000 help file, having the only advantage that it's more easily accessible but the disadvantage that some topics included in the help file are missing altogether from the book..
