3.0 out of 5 stars Good Book but with technical errors, 23 Jul 2000
By andrew@thelindsays.co.uk (Berkshire, England.) - See all my reviews
I have been following the book and working through the application, although with a slightly different twist. I have come across a number of inconsistancies in the code fragments in the book that require the reader to look at the full listing at the end of each chapter to determine which bits are missing in order for the application to run at that stage. I have also found a number of programming errors that causes the application to crash at certain points, this may be due to it being an incomplete application or just plain bugs!

I am an experienced C programmer and Palm user, combining the two using this book has been a learning excercise. The book goes through a lot of the common controls and how to use them in the application that is being built up. You still need to refer to the Palm OS reference documents if there is anything you need to look at that is not covered in the book. The latest SDKs should have been include on the CD for reference, otherwise its a lengthy download!

The CD worked fine, although Constructor included with CodeWarrior Lite 6 has a few bugs around the icon editor part. I downloaded the latest Palm OS SDK 3.5 from the Palm site, following the update instructions this installed a later version of Constructor (v1.5) and has the additional benefit of installing a new startup library that removes the annoying popup at the start of each application!

2.0 out of 5 stars not very good, 16 Jun 2000
By A Customer
this book is definitly not for the beginner. Although it says readers should have an understanding of C programming, what it means is users should be good C programmers with experience using the language.

I only got through two chapters and found several inconsistencies, e.g. functions are given one name in source code, and refered to by a different (if only slightly ) name when the source code is analysed, can you imagine how confusing that is for beginner programmers?

Also, the CD failed to run, causing a 'bad archive' error on two different PC's, maybe just a faulty CD but very dissapointing all the same.

If the book was called 'palm OS programming for experienced C programmers' and got the technical errors corrected, fine. but it doesn't warrant the 'from the ground up' title.

2.0 out of 5 stars Out of date and errors throughout, 6 Feb 2002
Very poorly written book for the title of 'from the ground up!' The writer has not done a proof read, or got someone to dummy through the book to check that code fragments are correct. After only a few chapters I got very frustrated with the mass of errors. If you plan to program in Palm OS 3.5 SDK or above and use the latest version of codewarrior, this book is pointless as all the code is aimed at up to Palm OS 3.1, I spent the first few hours trying to figure out where I was going wrong only to discover on the Palm website a useful info page on the changes to some basic elements of the Palm OS 3.5. I also feel there is a lack of explanation of how and what certain built in Palm OS functions actually do, they are used in code fragments with little or no explanation. I have got so far through the book now I feel I should complete it although I can tell it is going to be a struggle.
