Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

You generally can't pick up knowledge of Cisco products casually, the way you can learn about Microsoft Windows, Unix and other products that are more generally accessible. For this reason, Cisco: A Beginner's Guide performs a valuable service. It introduces Internet working novices to the language and fact base that underlie routers, switches, network protocols and the rest of the Internet's infrastructure. True enough, no book can teach you everything you need to know about a subject as complex as Internetworking, it does a great job of giving you the background you need to perform well in a class or do hands-on experiments intelligently.

The book goes heavy on prose, enabling the reader to slowly absorb the truth about complex systems as the author lays a foundation of knowledge and proceeds to build upon it. Conceptual diagrams help drive home relationships among network devices, though a series of "blueprints" in the centre of this book suffer from being split down the middle by the book's binding--fold-outs would be far better. This is a superb book, one of the best around on Internetworking with Cisco. It would make an excellent first purchase for someone with ambitions to become a Cisco expert, as well as a fine "fundamentals" reference for more accomplished network engineers.--David Wall, amazon.com

Topics covered: Internetworking from a theoretical standpoint, backed up by information on how Cisco products handle implementation (meaning, in part, that you get information on which Cisco lines and models are good for which jobs). Technically, readers get the goods on Cisco Internetwork Operating System (IOS), routers, switches, routing protocols and security. There's great information on the pantheon of Cisco certifications, too.

Product Description

Cisco Systems now holds over 80 percent of the Internet infrastructure. This text is an entry-point for the IT professional who is still unfamiliar with the way in which Cisco operates. It provides a fundamental overview of the subject and should be read before the certification study guides.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great start, 17 Sep 2001

This book is the best place to start.Once you digest it,you are ready to tackle the study guide to prepare for the exam.Money well spent! Study guides by Cisco press or Sybex can be very difficult to follow if you don't have the basic Cisco background. This book does the trick. Now I feel ready to start with the study guide.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good intro book, 2 Jul 2000
By A Customer
I read this book as an introduction to cisco, and it did the trick, it allows people with basic or little knowledge to get a grip with cisco, it has excellent diagrams which explain the various ideas of cisco. The IOS section does take some re-reads to get a complete underdstanding. This would be a great first step before you buy one of the CCNA study guides

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for overall Cisco and network knowledge, 1 April 2002
By A Customer
I bought this book three years after attaining my MCSE and eighteen months after becoming a CCNA. I find that this book fills in the little holes that are there even after passing numerous exams. It also gives a global picture of the internet structure with some good graphics that puts the whole technology into perspective.

Not just for beginners but for experienced people as well.
