Product Description
An unparalleled insider’s look at the management practices that have made McDonald’s a household name on six continents--that everyone can use

What is it about McDonald’s that has made it not only the number-one fast-food franchise in the world, but a branding icon second only to Coca-Cola for world wide name recognition? Few people are as well qualified to answer that question as Paul Facella. Beginning behind the counter at age sixteen, Facella literally grew up in the company’s culture. From counter, to grill, to Executive Vice President, Facella, over the course of his distinguished thirty- four year career at McDonald’s, developed an intimate knowledge of the fast-food behemoth’s management practices as well as personal ties to its legendary leaders, including founder Ray Kroc, and former president Ed Rensi and former CEO Fred Turner.

In Everything I Know About Business I Learned at McDonald’s Paul Facella takes you inside to offer for a uniquely intimate and authoritative look at the McDonald’s organization, system, and culture. He extracts powerful lessons for managers, executives, and entrepreneurs in all industries on leadership, people development, and teamwork.

From the Back Cover

How Old Fashioned Virtues Made McDonald's a Branding Icon

“Written in the same good faith with which Facella lived his tenure at McDonald's, this book relates lessons that are time-tested and applicable in any business, of any size, in any era.”
-Jeff Kindler, Chairman and CEO, Pfizer

“Paul Facella has completely captured the timeless and practical essence of the ‘McDonald’s Way’ that allowed so many ordinary people to succeed beyond their wildest dreams. Reading this book will surely become a must-read for anyone aspiring to win.”
—Claire Babrowski, executive vice president, chief operating officer of Toys “R” Us

“The sentiments expressed and the experiences so eloquently demonstrated in Paul’s book clearly define how this company keeps employees engaged and keeps ‘ketchup flowing’ in the blood.”
—Janann Williams, vice president of people, MccLane company, Inc.

“The book shows how McDonald’s successful business model was founded on seven simple ‘human principles,’ and is useful for any business person as a guide for how their business can succeed.”
—Jean-Marie Horovitz, former managing director, Citigroup

“How essential relationships, integrity, and culture are at McDonald’s is clear. This book, through lessons learned, translates its applicability to all business environments.”
—Daniel T. Henry, chief financial officer, American Express

3.0 out of 5 stars Sounds good but..., 19 Mar 2009

An easy and - in many places - inspiring read praising McDonald's to the skies. Unfortunately, I know someone connected to McDonald's, who tells me that, in his experience, it is nothing like the claims made in this book. What a pity.

It would have been wonderful to find that there is actually a corporate entity dedicated to high principles. If there is one (and I came across none in my 30+ years in the corporate jungle), McDonald's isn't it.

I ordered this book on the understanding that it would shed some light on the business model which has made McDonalds an international brand with a multi-billion pound/dollar turnover. I also knew that the author had worked in McDonalds, from service to management.

I wasn't quite prepared for how sycophantic its tone would be. It's one thing to love the brand/company you work(ed) for, but quite another to come over as rather insincere as is the case here.

Although it was easy to read, I didn't really find the book especially informative or really find anything inspiring or interesting. A good read for fans of the brand, although again, I feel it's more suited and marketed to the American reader.

First of all, I think I deserve congratulations for actually finishing this thing. At a mere 240 odd pages this might not seem like much to you, but getting out alive is another story entirely!

It was morbid fascination that led to me ordering this book, I will make no secret of the fact that I am not exactly McDonald's number one fan. I haven't eaten there for well over a decade now but I have always appreciated how their business model seems to have spread and propagated like some form of global virus.

Does Paul Facella's book give the reader the secret steps to taking over the business world? Not really, it's the same 'seven steps to success' that you would read in any A-level business studies text book, dressed up with a few McExamples which the author, bless him, seems to think are ground breaking and innovative.

The interesting thing about this book though, (morbid fascination once again rears its head), is the tone of the whole thing. Facella tells how he worked his way up from saturday burger flipper to regional manager over 20 years or something...but in telling us his story he is totally evangelical about the corporation. He just *loves* it and thinks that it's the answer to all answers. The big old yellow arches really are this guy's religion, and it makes for uncomfortable reading. He totally disregards or fails to mention any episodes in the McHistory where his beloved company may have been at fault - e.g. instead of discussing the McDonalds impact on the obesity epidemic he instead vaguely mentions 'dietary trends' and how they've impacted the success of the company! As if the thinking people who decide not to load up on cholesterol should feel shame for the weakening position of McDonalds in the stock market!

The rest of the book is basically a lot of name checking - "The former CEO but one said this to me...the finance director agreed....the janitor (and major share holder) told me this one time..." - and funnily enough they all seem to say the same things. ::insert yawn here::

Nothing ground breaking here folks, just plain annoying and quite galling in places. Read "Fast Food Nation" instead!
