This book is great for beginners. I say this because I'm a beginner and found it.....well great.
It's laid out in an easy to read way and the audio accompaniment is very effective at fine tuning your pronunciation.
It covers all the basic topics such as numbers, dates, families, food and shopping and much more.
Unlike some beginners books it concentrates on phrases aswell as single word vocabulary.
The only reason this book did not get 5 stars is because I felt it could include the Japanese Kanji text to the Romajii rather than trying to condense it into one chapter.
Otherwise a great starting point!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Introduction Which Simplifies a Complex Language, 18 Jan 2001
This book begins by teaching the basics of Japanese pronunciation with phonetical summaries. It then moves on to greatings and moves through the japanese language teaching you all you'll need to know on speaking Japanese. After 2 weeks I watched a half Japanese half English film and I understood everything Japanese in the film including the customs and formalities as well as the fluent language. An amazingly easy publication to learn from and well worth buying.

Now, because of Teach yourself Japanese,I am doing great in Japanese. It's really easy to understand. Well written. I think that Helen Gilhooly is a great teacher.

I've completed the book now, and I got the defective cassette replaced . . . so I'm going to go back and use the cassette to hone pronunciation and authentic accent.

It is very good at getting the point across and teaching you some Japanese without overwhelming you. My only qualms was the lack of total kana-immersion.
