Product Description

All sailors want to believe their boats can go anywhere and stand up to anything. Who knows when you might get caught by bad weather? It's enough to worry about your own responses without worrying about the safety of your boat. "The Seaworthy Offshore Sailboat" explains feature by feature how you can refit your boat for worry-free bluewater voyaging. Take the unique diagnostic questionnaire to determine whether your boat is capable of offshore sailing, then let John Vigor show you step by step how to get there, as he covers everything from structural modifications and reinforcements to rigging, engines, systems, and gear.Whether you're planning an offshore voyage or just dreaming of one, "The Seaworthy Offshore Sailboat" is the perfect guide. 'An invaluable resource. Vigor's practical wisdom gives you the know-how and confidence to prepare your boat for the sea' - "Cruising World". 'Not only hands us practical advice in a clear format but also the hope that an offshore voyage is fully within our grasp if we are willing to follow his roadmap' - "Good Old Boat". 'Vigor's questionnaire offers hard-to-find, honest evaluations of whether or not a boat is bluewater capable. This clear, objective reference will make fearless, prudent skippers' - "Mariner".

Book Description

Most owners of cruising sailboats wonder whether their boats are suitable for an offshsore passage, be it across the Gulf of Maine or the Pacific Ocean, and if not, whether they can be made suitable. This preoccupation arises partly from a latent spirit of adventure and partly from the desire for a seaworthy boat. We all want to believe that our boats can go anywhere and stand more of a beating from wind and waves than we can. Who knows when we might get caught out in the open by bad weather? It's enough to worry about our own responses without also having to suspect that the boat is fundamentally safe. Similarly, every potential buyer of a cruising sailboat is told that the boat is capable of sailing around the world. It's very difficult to get good advice and trustworthy facts, and that's where this book comes in. Focusing on production fiberglass cruising sailboats, The Seaworthy Offshore Sailboat explains, feature by feature, what makes a boat you can feel safe in anywhere.

5.0 out of 5 stars Top quality common sense information – an excellent read, 22 Mar 2006
By Lorimer Burn (Guildford, Surrey, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This is the 1st of John Vigor's books I have read, and it won't be the last. What sets him apart from many other excellent authors, is his simple style which gently and logically leads the reader through virtually all you need to give thought to, prior to proceeding offshore.

John explains his subjects with the greatest of care. His explanation of Seasickness (and remedies) is the best I've read. Similarly, the section on how to manage the sails of your yacht in heavy weather, and the effect of each decision is frankly, as comprehensive an explanation as you'll find in a book 3 times the size.

Be prepared to have a pencil to hand when reading this book, because there will be so many phrases and suggestions you'll know you'll want to come back to.

I'm preparing to go offshore, and John's advice deepens one's understanding of what is required (and what is not!) hugely.

Thank you John, for sharing your experience so well!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for any sailor going offshore, 3 Jan 2001
By A Customer
I enjoyed this book immensely. It contained a lot of common sense and is well worth a read by everyone who sails offshore or is going to sail offshore. The underlying theme is to help you prepare your boat for any event at sea. I particularly liked the "black box" idea!
