5.0 out of 5 stars The best for its purpose: Explaining import/export, 6 Dec 1996
By A Customer
I know international trade and this book is the best for its purpose. It explains how to import and export from A to Z in clear language. If you want to get started or are already doing international business this book gets to the heart of the subject and will save you money. Just do what it tells you in its step-by-step format. Can't lose.

4.0 out of 5 stars Does exactly what it says on the Can, 11 Mar 2004
By A Customer
This is a good book and essential if you are new to international trade. However, despite what the other reviews say, this book IS written for an american audience. All the references to government bodies and govenment web resources etc are US based. Strange too, as the book refers to 'West Germany' and states that the UK uses Euros!!! However despite this, the first half of the book details information about the commonalities of import/export, success and the trade game, launching a profitable transaction, planning and negotiating, selling with E-commerce, completing a successful transaction and how to set up your own import/export business, which is of course information universal to anyone in the world. This book really does what it says on the cover - it tells you "How to Get Started in International Trade". If thats what you want to do, then buy this book. Its basic, but its essential to get started. My recommendation for the new entrepreneur is to buy this book, and then buy Building an Import/Export Business by Kenneth D. Weiss, which again, is primarly written for an US audience but very worthy of 5 stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gave me an excellent introduction to international trade, 3 Dec 2005
By 100%utah (Great Britain) - See all my reviews
A decent book to help people starting out in International Trade seems to be a bit of a scant commodity. I trawled through most of Amazon's offerings (the majority of which had poor customer reviews) before deciding upon this one.
I would have given the book five stars, but there are a couple of parts of it which rankle a little. This is not the book in which I want or need to read that a trip abroad is an opportunity to lose weight, tips on what businesswomen should wear and a page on positive body language. This book is unashamedly written for the American reader. As such, some chapters of the book, such as US Customs Law, are worth skipping. Five years is a long time in terms of Internet technology, and Nelson's tips on the Internet remind one of an other-entheusiastic parent trying to be cool. Nelson suggests "even using email" as a viable alternative to fax and telex. If you want to learn to write HTML there are far better books to teach it. You get the picture.
Criticism aside, I have found the book an invaluable resource. Prior to purchasing this book I had an idea that I might like to start importing goods for sale on eBay. Nelson's inspirational writing style, good use of examples and comprehensive advice has really entheused me. Notwithstanding the fact that there are some parts of the book which are redundant for the British reader, most of it is very relevant irrespective of nationality. The author explains all of the methods of sending payment abroad as well as explaining the necessary paperwork (of which there is plenty) associated with shipping and customs. The book has loads of useful contacts and websites detailed in it. There is a comprehensive chapter on writing a business plan, plenty of figures showing real examples of shipping and customs documentation and some excellent cost plans which are well worth copying into a spreadsheet. At the end of the book is a decent Glossary of Commonly Used Trade Terms as well as a synopsis of the World's regions as far as trade goes.
In conclusion, I'm glad that I bought it and can recommend it to anyone who is considering getting involved in trading any sort of goods between countries.
