Product Description

From the Back Cover
Harrowing shoreside reading!" Booklist

One of the world's three great ocean sailing competitions, the annual 630-mile race from Sydney, Australia, to Hobart, Tasmania, pits sailboats against the notoriously rough waters of Bass Strait and the Tasman Sea.

The 115 boats leaving Sydney Harbor on December 26, 1998 expected rough weather, but the gale that caught the boats well at sea in the predawn hours of December 27 was anything but routine. The freak, unseasonal storm brought hurricane-strength winds, waves six stories high, and the worst sailing disaster in recent history. Seven boats were abandoned at sea and five sank. Fifty-seven sailors were rescued, plucked from the decks of broken boats or from the sea itself under impossible conditions. Six sailors died.

"The famous killer Sydney - Hobart Race has found its chronicler in Rob Mundle. An Australian journalist who was on the scene . . . Mundle's portrayals of courageous sailors and heroic rescuers fighting for their lives are as vivid as any I have read."
John Rousmaniere, author, Fastnet: Force 10 --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars More drama in one book than all the Patrick O'Brien series., 16 Aug 1999
By A Customer
Rob Mundle gets to the very heart of his subject, the confined quarters of a sailboat in horrendous sea conditions. He's been there. He puts you there so effectively in his vivid accounts of these stricken yachts that you come away from reading the book, thanking the good Lord that you the reader are still alive...having survived the storm. A must read for anyone going to sea or building a boat to sail offshore! Mundle gives you more drama in one book than you get in the entire Patrick O'Brien series.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very readable account of the '98 Sydney-Hobart race., 15 Aug 1999
By A Customer
I enjoyed the book and learned something of offshore sailing. The real heros (male and female) of this story are the helicopter rescue crews. As a sailor myself I was hoping for the equivalent of John Rousmaniere's _Fastnet,_Force_10_ but this book was written too soon after the events to include such safety information. I recommend the book to anyone interested in storms, offshore boating, or just a good adventure.

5.0 out of 5 stars ESSENTIAL READING FOR OFF-SHORE SAILORS, 10 Aug 1999
By A Customer
EVEN THOUGH I'M NOT A SAILOR, I FOUND THIS BOOK A GRIPPING REPORT ON THIS SAILING TRAGEDY. I SUGGEST THIS BOOK TO ANYONE WHO LOVES ADVENTURE 0N THE LAST EARTHLY FRONTIER. I'M SPEECHLESS, HOW SUCH A MAGNIFICIENT RACE COULD TURN SO FOUL. IT'S TERRIFYING, INCREDIBLY WELL WRITTEN, PERFECT FODDER FOR A TELEMOVIE..

This is simply a superb book. Its narrative force practically places you on board a number of the yachts as they head toward Hobart. Read more
