Book Description

Schaum's Outline of Programming with C++, 2nd Edition is an update of the highly successful first edition. Due to the recognition of a Standard version of C++ by the ISO in 1998, the version of the language present in the first edition of this book is now outdated and incomplete. A revision updating the language will allow us to obtain the validation of the ISO and is likely to improve sales of the book, which will be in high demand by professional programmers and students in need of learning how to program with the approved ISO standard. Additionally, since ETS recently changed the programming language for the Advanced Placement Computer Science Exam from Pascal to C++ many students will be looking for a guide to C++.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good text for HNC/HND students, 31 Oct 1999
By A Customer
This book deals with the practical aspects of C++ programming. The first half of the book uses a procedural style, and the second half concentrates on object-oriented topics.

I recently had to teach an object-oriented programming course to both HNC and HND students. I found that with the second half of this book I was able to devise and teach a course very quickly with very little preparation. The students liked the book as well.

The first half of the book can be used for an introduction to programming course.

4.0 out of 5 stars Close to perfect C++ learner's guide, 14 Jun 1999
By A Customer
With this book I learnt C++ from scratch. Even now when I can handle C++ quite well and used it to earn a living, I am still using the way the author presented the material in this book to think when I write OO programs. I said it's a "close to perfect" book is, in fact, to express a kinda regret that I need to find some other materials on C++ to tell me more about multiple inheritance. If not taking this into account, I would rate this a 5-star book. From scratch, it shows and walks with you the way from how to write procedural functions, arrays, pointers to classes, from simple private inheritance to polymorphism and from objects to containers. Simply, it's really a great book for beginners.

4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant explanations - let down by numerous errors, 4 Dec 1998
By A Customer
I wanted a refresher course on C++, having been away from the language for a few years. This book has some of the best explanations of C++ topics I've ever come across, e.g. protected members and virtual functions. As it also covers the subject right from the basics it would serve well as a first text on the subject. Be warned though - there are numerous (small) mistakes littered throughout the book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book.
Only if this book provided answers for all the questions it presented, it will be rated 5 stars!

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb, practical, perfect first time C++ book
Great first book for learning C++. The only deficiency is in the index. The book is very practical with examples rather than the vague, verbal, stilted prose found in other books.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK, but check the errata first
Like software that is rushed out the door full of bugs, this book seems to have been rushed to the printer and is REPLETE with errors. Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent explanations and more than enough examples
This book is an excellent supplement to any C++ book, but it can also stand alone.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent reference book
This is one of the best C++ books I've ever seen, and I've looked at quite a few. It has the only useful discussion of stream classes, including strstream, I've ever found... Read more
