Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
The thing to remember about the consumer telecommunications industry is that the greatest technical innovations in the world don't matter a bit if they're not properly implemented and marketed. Delivering xDSL, though it is a technical book that's rife with packet diagrams and conceptual line drawings, never forgets that residential Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) technologies have to be profitably sold. Therefore, for every page devoted to explaining how the various DSL standards (collectively called xDSL) work, at least half as much space is dedicated to giving the reader information about what the standards cost to deliver and how much they're in demand. The result is a fine resource, suitable for broad-minded engineers, managers, and organisational planners alike.

The book provides background information (including the fundamentals of the digital local loop and some information on xDSL's competing technologies), and carefully defines all potentially unfamiliar terms as they come up. Readers may get the impression that they're watching a carefully organised seminar, complete with visual aids and real-world case studies. It's an effective approach for a book that's meant to appeal to such a broad cross-section of the telecommunications industry. --David Wall

Topics covered: Using the various Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) technologies for delivering high bandwidth to home and small-business users over the existing copper local loops. Why there's a demand for such service, what technologies have come about to fill the need, and how the DSL standards fill the need. Sections address head-end and customer-premises equipment, networking, and the business aspects of network operation.

Product Description
Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) technologies can move high speed digital information through existing telephone wires. It provides faster Internet access, enhanced telephony, videoconferencing, and video on demand. This text shows the telecommunications provider how to use the service.

1.0 out of 5 stars A highly priced book offering little/poor DSL information, 27 Feb 2001
By philws@talk21.com (Winchester, UK) - See all my reviews
W.Dal Berry's foreword could well sum up this book. ''Many Americans have no idea what DSL means or what it will bring, yet DSL promises profound changes in information exchange & communications.'' Now my guess would be that if you are considering the purchase of this book then there is an outside chance that you may have some idea of what DSL is! The title delivering xDSL may even suggest that you are in or have a close interest in the telecommunication industry & need to know more about delivering xDSL. If so then this is not the book for you! The first sections of the book covers switching history & when we do get onto xDSL by chapter 3 the detail on each individual xDSL technology is very poor. By chapter 4 we are off DSL & look at alternatives? Chapter 5 returns to the DSL subject with discussions (& pictures) on CPE equipment but detail is very basic & gives no technical breakdown of the equipment. By chapter 7 we are on to the economics of xDSL & what it will cost you, the telecommunications company to set up a DSL service. This is the most detailed chapter, so if you can now plug this gear in after reading the first 6 chapters then go ahead!! At least you should know how much it will cost! The final chapters then discuss the applications that DSL will bring us all. But then again I bet if you were looking to buy this book then you would have already worked that one out, yes? This book is better suited to a first year telecommunications student who should have some much better material available by their final year at a fraction of this price!

4.0 out of 5 stars A tech book that's understandable!, 4 Dec 2001
By A Customer
Being a non-technical marketing manager in the telecommunications industry, I purchased this book for the purpose of gaining additional knowledge on DSL broadband technologies. To my surprise after reading "Delivering xDSL" from cover to cover, I actually now understand what this technology is all about and more importantly, at least from my marketing perspective, this book has unveiled many broadband opportunities. I give the authors Harte and Kikta credit for helping me do my job better! I recommend without reservation this book to anyone looking to improve their understanding of DSL.

4.0 out of 5 stars insightful, well written and organised book on DSL, 3 Dec 2001
By A Customer
This is a well written and organised book. It covers the technologies and also gives excellent business perspectives, delivers a great deal of clarity in explaining the various DSL technologies and how they can be used (applications). The authorial insights throughout proved very helpful.
