Product Description

Synopsis
Describes one couple's journey around the Arctic Circle by sailboat.

From the Publisher
Reviews in the national press available to date.
Library Journal: With no daylight and temperatures as low as 60 degrees below zero, Bylot Island in Canada's Northwest Territories, across Baffin Bay from northern Greenland, seems an unlikely place to spend the winter, especially alone in a small boat frozen in the ice. Simon, a wandering American with many nautical miles behind him,and his wife, Diana, a well-travelled New Zealander, planned to share the experience. But when her father's illness called Diana home, Simon stayed on alone with only a cat and occasional curious wildlife for companionship. Reading about so much darkness and ice and the hardship and introspection brought about by them sounds grueling, but Simon can write. When not sharing his inner reflections, he provides interesting observations about the Inuits of the region. The experience, combined with Simon's fine narrative, make this book a good choice for larger public library travel sections. Harold M. Otness, Southern Oregon Univ.

5.0 out of 5 stars Adventure in the extreme, 11 April 2001
By duncan@duncanbrown.co.uk (Inverness, Scotland) - See all my reviews
A book for all lovers of adventure, sailing, and the Arctic North. The author sets out to sail his yacht north firstly to Greenland and then, with a change of heart, to the far north of Canada knowing he only has an ice window of a few weeks to sail in and out again. He then deliberately traps his yacht into the ice to become trapped for the duration of the long dark Arctic winter. Over a hundred miles from the nearest human habitation, with his supplies running out, in total darkness and alone - apart from the ferocious polar bears: this is adventure in the extreme.

3.0 out of 5 stars Determined or Selfish?, 5 May 1999
By A Customer
As I read this book, I was not sure what I thought of Alvah Simon. Was he a great adventurer or was he simply a man so obsessed with fulfilling his dream that his wife and family were of secondary importance? I admired his respect for nature and for native cultures. I was deeply troubled by the fact that he was (by choice) not at his wife's side as she faced what was probably one of the greatest tragedies of her life. She probably felt just as alone as he did. I think the true hero of this story is Simon's wife, Diana. Through all of her husband's questionable decisions and antics, she stood by him and never lost faith.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Selfish Man, 24 May 1999
By A Customer
I was struck again and again by the stupidity of this man's actions. He seemed to have a death wish and narrowly escaped with his life. No big deal if he made this trip alone, but he didn't. Time and time again, he put his wife's live in jeopardy to fulfill his own juvenile ambitions. A compelling book, yes, but rarely have I seen such a selfish, arrogant individual who nonetheless holds himself up as a good liberal with deep insights into the human psyche. Please! Simon struck me as someone with the common sense of 15-year old boy drunk on whiskey with his parent's car keys.
