Product Description

Product Description
This text includes information on ATM in the enterprise and on the Internet. It includes coverage of ATM standards, and common applications used in conjunction, such as multimedia and real time support.

From the Back Cover

The most current, most complete, and most "real world" guide ever on ATM.

This landmark reference is the ultimate "in print" database of ATM technology, services, and applications. Emphasizing practice over theory in an engaging, fun-to-read style, the authors present high-level summaries followed up with detailed treatment of all key areas of ATM technology. It is the only book that provides in-depth treatment of such "hot" new protocols as:

-IP and Tag Switching.
-Private Network Network Interface (PNNI).

-LAN Emulation (LANE).

-Understandable View of ATM Signaling.

-Multiprotocol Over ATM (MPOA).

-Available Bit Rate (ABR) flow control.

-Internet ReSerVation Protocol (RSVP).

In addition, ATM Theory and Applications explores the remarkable range of ATM applications, objectively compares ATM with competing technologies, and even offers some provocative predictions about how ATM technology might evolve.

"This update to our best selling book not only provides a working tool for someone wanting to learn ATM, but also provides a reference for the practicing professional applying real-world solutions to business and technology problems."

4.0 out of 5 stars Definately not in the "...for Dummies" category., 10 Nov 1998
By A Customer
To the point, very detailed study of ATM and it's relationship and interworking with other network access and transport protocols. Not for the networking novice. Especially well done explanations of how other services like Frame Relay, TCP/IP, voice, and video are transported over ATM. I give it 4 stars. This book is aimed at the intermediate and advanced networking types who need an in depth tutorial on ATM network functionality.

2.0 out of 5 stars Repetetive and trivial, 1 Mar 2001
By A Customer
I do not like this book, on the whole I found it gave a patronising tone. It does contain useful information, but this to be buried within redundancies (such as references to "Darwinian jungles") and repetitions. It is poorly structured, for example it uses technical terms prior to their definition (and definitions are often ambiguous). It exhibits a poor writing style for it tends anthropomorphise, and manages to evade points rather than state them clearly. The diagrams are often very bad indeed: some have icons of devils for example, and logarithmic scales are presented as linear. Its only redeeming feature is its breadth of coverage. I much prefer the book on ATM by Martin de Prycker, which although older and not so broad, has the merit of providing underlying principles, and clear statements (although it too presents log. scales as linear).

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellently thoughtout and detailed book, 26 Jan 2000
By A Customer
This books provides a level of detail into the workings of ATM, SDH and broadband, no other book has achieved, it is the ultimate reference guide to the Broadband ATM arena. Considering the technical content and depth of material it remains remarkably easy to read.

One word of warning though if your new to ATM it isn't the the book to start with. But to myself wanting to know the indepth working of signalling method and upper-layers it is the best I seen..

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent coverage of ATM and upper layers
The introduction to ATM is quite long but worth reading. ATM basic concepts are well illustrated. The text is dense (even for a 800 page book). Read more
