Product Description

Product Description
This is an introductory science book covering the essentials of programming, such as might be found in a book on a simpler programming language (Fortran, C or Pascal), while giving due emphasis to the paradigm of object-oriented programming, the use of classes and the construction of data structures using objects. Key features include: updated for the Java Development Kit 1.1; more than 300 exercises; integrated treatment of Java applications and applets.

From the Publisher
The authors have created a set of simple classes to get students up and running on using objects early (Chapter 2). The library features a graphical input and a graphical output class.
The authors put an emphasis on debugging, which teaches students how to troubleshoot their code. These specieal "Debugging Sections" are found throughout the book. This revision incorporates the latest version of the java language.
UML is used to visually show the relationships between classes and objects. This prepares students for what they will see in the real-world. The authors use just a subset of UML, so that it is not overwhelming to beginning students.
This book uses an objects first approach. Object-oriented topics are covered spirally-basics are covered first and then more information is added on the OO topics as the book moves along. This keeps students from becoming overwhelmed by the object-oriented material.
Quick Exercises have added to each chapter to allow students to quickly check their work as they proceed through the chapter.

1.0 out of 5 stars This book is terrible!, 1 Aug 1999
By A Customer
This book is used by the Univ of Auckland for its stage 1 CS textbook and it won't be used next yr.

As Java is a high level OOL, the authors did a very poor job in explaining even the very basic concept of OOP. (e.g. class, method, etc)

2.0 out of 5 stars Those looking to learn Java should continue searching, 8 May 1999
By A Customer
This book is not for those who do not already know Java. This book suffers from a lack of concise explanations of concepts. It also jumps from basic concepts to more complex ones with almost no transition. Therefore anyone who fails to comprehend earlier concepts (a distinct possibility due to poor explanations) will be at a total loss for later, more important concepts. I urge any teacher who desires a book that aids the learning of Java (or computer science in general) to forego this book and search for one of higher caliber.

2.0 out of 5 stars This book is simply terrible, 4 April 1999
By A Customer
Don't buy this one if you are actually looking for a book that will teach you the ins and outs of programming with Java. Simple topics are explained so in-depth that it confuses the reader more than it helps. Conversely, complex topics are breezed through with little or no mention as to their inner workings. Its the perfect book for a college weed out course, though; confusing and lacking a point. The authors do not even bother to tell you that the Java Development Kit can be downloaded for free from the Sun web site. That might have helped!
