Product Description

Around the Buoys is a guide for beginning and intermediate racers who are mired in the bottom or middle of the fleet. The first start-to-finish book for small-boat racers in 10 years, it dissects all the elements, then puts them together to show how they interrelate. With the help of numerous diagrams, readers will also learn to recognize when they are threatened on the race course and when they must move to realize a potential advantage. Comprehensive yet nonintimidating.

Book Description

No other recreation combines so many elements--speed, tactics, strategy, timing, execution--and penalizes a failure in any one of these so brutally as sailboat racing. Around the Buoys is a uniquely holistic guide for beginning and intermediate racers who are mixed in the bottom or middle of the fleet. The first start-to-finish book for small-boat racers in 10 years, it dissects all the elements, then puts them together to show how they interrelate. With the help of numerous diagrams, readers will also learn to recognize when they are threatened on the race course, and when they must move to realize a potential advantage. Comprehensive yet nonintimidating.

Probably worthwhile in it's day, but now unfortunately obsoleted by the major 1997 rules rewrite. Also the approach is to take you around a classic Olympic triangle - these days most keelboat classes sail windward/leeward. Can't now be recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ideal for one-design racers in need of solid fundamentals., 19 Oct 1998
By A Customer
This is the book Walker should have written. Huck takes you through a day's race in orderly and intellignet steps. I've been racing one-designs for many years and found this to be a very good reminder and tactical and strategic piece that has helped me quite a bit. A definite buy.
