From the Author
Working with timber need not be a mysterious processMy wife, who is also an Architect, says that her life would have been easier had she had my book when she was in Architecture School.
What I have tried to do is take the mystery out of working with timber as a structural material. Rather than include the endless tables typical of wood engineering books, I focus, instead, on the simple principles on which they are based. My goal is to help you develop a feel for timber, to be comfortable with its idiosyncracies.
The book grew out of my experiences designing and building with timber. It takes you through the entire design and construction process, using examples from prominent timber structures. There are hundreds of illustrations. Interesting aspects are shown in drawings, in contextual photographs, and in details, and are cross-referenced to make navigation easy. For similar reasons, the index is extensively cross-referenced.
Although my treatment of the subject is rigorous, it is meant to be accessible to everyone. In fact, one of my editors, with no prior knowledge of timber design or construction, and with no prompting from me, said she found the book and its subject fascinating. I think you will too.
