Product Description

Here are 75 novel and wonderful boats--some strange, some beautiful, all of them paragons of Philip Bolger's form-follows-function design philosophy. A planing microtrawler; a glass-galleried, beachable birdwatching boat; a fully enclosed ocean-cruising rowboat; cruising sailboats that take the ground at low tide; power, sail, and rowing boats from 6 to 95 feet--these are boats as only Bolger's unfettered imagination does them. This is the first collection of Bolger's work in almost 15 years. It is long overdue.

"Bolger is an eloquent writer and his comments run the gamut from hilarious to profound."--The Ensign

"Bolger brings a kind of youthful feeling to yacht design--he would rather make precedent than follow it."--WoodenBoat

"Bolger has a way of seducing even the lay reader into thinking about and beginning to understand boat design."--Cruising World

"Boat lovers who are used to designers who conceive the same boat over and over, camouflaged with a face-lifting here and there, will be amazed at Phil Bolger's diversity."--Boatbuilder

5.0 out of 5 stars 75 unconventional designs to set you thinking about boats, 3 April 2001
By A Customer
Philip Bolger takes an often unconventional, but always very thought provoking approach to designing boats that really do suit the purpose.

Not one to be contrained by fashion and often using outspoken ideas, Phil Bolger has amassed a wide range of experience and produced some beautiful, some novel, but also practical boats.

Nearly all of the design in this book have been proven, often in conjunction with Dynamite Payson his long time collaborator and author of the 'Instant Boat' books.

This book should be a must for any amatuer or professional boat designer, and anyone who is interested in why we build boats the way we do.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting fireside reading but limited real-world appeal, 21 Aug 2006
By O. Lund (Sussex, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Bolger has put together a book which covers a range of boats from the breakdown punt to the large ocean-going cruiser. To be clear, the book does not contain full construction plans for the 75 boats and you will not be able to build a boat using this book alone.

Instead, the book is best viewed as a sort of "study-plan package" which, by showing some very unconventional - and in some cases untested - designs will raise your interest enough to make you want to order the full construction plans. In this way, it's very similar to the "other" well known series of boat plan books. However, personally, I found the majority of the designs a bit too unconventional and came away wanting something a bit more detailed.
