First Sentence
To many people, the ideal powerboat would have a top speed somewhere approaching March 1 (or at least feel that way), have the living space of a penthouse condo, be as impressive as the Taj Mahal, operate on the budget of an economy car and never need maintenance. Read the first page

5.0 out of 5 stars A one-stop book that answers beginners basic questions., 30 Jan 1999
By A Customer
I purchased this book because it answered basic power boating questions in one convenient book. The answers could have been found by pouring over a multitude of boating magazines. Much that is covered here can be found in the "classic" books. This book isn't as dry and is well written. A classic book like "Chapmans piloting, seamanship and smallboat handling" (an important resource) is awfully daunting to a beginner anxious to get out on the water. Every beginner should read Bob's chapter on, "Why boats don't behave like cars."

I especially liked the early on comparison of the 3 hull types and of the power types - these are some of the first questions a new boater must tackle to make an intelligent choice when shopping for a boat. This book also covers the basics of docking and use of docklines. This isn't the only book you'll buy but it is a good start by a competent, organized writer/seaman. Jeff Siddons

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Basics for getting started..., 13 Jun 2000
By A Customer
This is a very comprehensive book on getting started with power boating. However, it can be a little too basic in places and very Americanised.

I very much liked the comparison between the various hull types and that it raised the obvious questions regarding whether to go Inboard or Outboard. Fantastic section on positioning your boat for mooring with the different engine types.

Overall it does highlight many valid points you need to look at, before investing your money into a new boat and in my opinion it's worth a read!
