Product Description

Product Description

Since childhood, Jewel has turned to her own short stories, vivid narratives, and starkly honest writings to revisit the past, chronicle the many characters she's encountered, and trace the intricate, unpredictable patterns of her days. In CHASING DOWN THE DAWN, recording artist, actress, and best-selling author Jewel opens her intimate journals to create a vivid montage of the people, places, relationships, and passages that coloured the life she came from and marked the last magical, turbulent, and ultimately transformational year. Drawn from her remarkable chronicle of life on the road during the Spirit World Tour, this unforgettable collection of freeze-frames captures unusual images from Jewel's childhood in Alaska, her beginnings as a struggling artist, and her challenges as a daughter, sister, and woman. Jewel paints an unblinkingly honest picture of the exceptional journey that carried her to the world's stage. Here, as if pulled from a stack of snapshots, are Jewel's moment-by-moment observations on life as she now lives it: the pleasure of sold-out performances and the pressures of her industry...the sweetness of love and bitterness of loss...friendship, freedom, and the small miracles we ourselves create. And here - in a book that allows the reader a rare glimpse of life's turning points as if viewed from over the author's shoulder - are Jewel's deeply personal insights on the events that shaped her understanding: her parents' divorce, her experience of poverty, the healing of her difficult relationship with her father, and the development of her unique talent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely fantastic insight into a truly amazing person, 27 April 2002
I purchased this book on Thursday and by the End of Friday I had finished it. I could not put it down. I have never read such a detailed insight into an individuals life through childhood, right up until the woman she is now. The book is written in such a way that you can just pick it up and read any portion of it at random and you will still get the big picture of what is going through her mind. I cannot wait to read it again as It is the kind of book that can shape your life and the way you look at things. In a word - Fantastic!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Jewel's unforgettable memories that you will remember too, 14 Jul 2001
By A Customer
Intimacy can never be boring and that's why this book will keep you occupied for hours. I was amazed what Jewel Kilcher had gone through in her life - from the homestead in Alaska where she did most of her growing up to her life as a pop star.
Most people could write a book like this about their lives but it would be nothing exciting; the form and special touches Jewel writes hers in is what makes this book that little bit more special. Most of this book consists of Jewel's actual journal entries, which makes the reader feel that they have been allowed to cross the privacy line and are drawn closer to her by doing this. Other areas of this book are written in short stories of people she meets or experiences she lives through.
Jewel has also added her own family photographs along with ones she has taken herself. There are small drawings by Jewel and poetry that describe how she was feeling at a certian time
All these special touches add to this book being a modern classic. I didn't really like her before I read this book, but when I read it I felt that I knew her, that the things she shared with me must have made me her best friend and that's why you cannot dislike her.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bound to be a classic, 26 Oct 2000
By A Customer
As far as I am aware, this is the first time an autobiography of sorts has been written in prose. Jewel's words are very good at describing the atmosphere of a situation and how she feels, this allows all the images to be projected into the imagination very well. I feel perhaps though that Jewel is well aware that Chasing the Dawn will sell plainly due to her name and not the content, this book probably would not sell in the same kind of numbers if it had been anyone else.

All the same, Jewel has graced us with her literature once again. I know it will not make the equivalent number of sales in the UK as it will in the USA, but at the end of the day, and maybe in years to come, it is bound to be a classic!

If you are a book collector or a Jewel fan I would buy "Chasing Down the Dawn" whilst the first editions are still hot off the press!
