Product Description

Product Description

A scientifically proven four-step self-treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) which enables people to modify their behaviour and their brain chemistry. OCD is a condition which affects millions of people worldwide. This work shows how sufferers can cure themselves by their own determination rather than through psycho-pharmaceuticals. Using real-life examples from real patients, it scientifically validates this cognitive-behavioural self-treatment through visually striking brain imaging studies, which show that people can systematically modify their own brain metabolic activity.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is an OCD bible, 1 Jan 2003
By David Cupit "dcupit" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book is a god send. A book is based on the authors wondefull work, and he has defied many of the scientists, stuck in the old, tired conventions, by scientifically proving that your mind can change your brain chemistry, if directed properly. The technique which he has developed, and spells out in this book, a god send for OCD sufferers like me, is fantastic.

5.0 out of 5 stars A real life saver - a truly brilliant book., 23 Sep 2000
WHAT A FABULOUS BOOK! This book really has helped me so drastically. I have had OCD symptoms for a good 26 years, and they have been getting progressively worse. Many times I have felt desperate, suicidal and as if I was literally going mad. I tried clinical psychologists and counsellers but they tended to advocate very time consuming and confusing therapies, not to mention the fact that they blamed my OCD on my poor Dad. When I got this book, I was at my wits end. OCD has ruined every aspect of my life. Jeffrey Schwartz's book showed me that (1) OCD is a genuine medical problem, as opposed to something you have only if you're "nuerotic" - which is how some people view me. (2) It accounts for many other personality problems I have that no-one else EVER connected with OCD (which gave me such hope that my whole life can be changed through therapy) and (3) That there is hope and that recovery is indeed something you can do yourself, without being bogged down by ridiculously complex exposure therapy plans. I can't recommend this book highly enough. Just understanding my OCD the way Schwartz explains it has given me great hope and peace - two things I haven't have for a very long time. Thank God for people like Schwartz who have a genuine understanding and compassion for people with OCD, and for the hope his work brings to sufferers. Waste no more time - get this book NOW!

5.0 out of 5 stars This book has been a God send, 21 Feb 2007
By longstandingocdsufferer (Kent, Great Britain) - See all my reviews
I actually came on amazon specifically so that I could encourage people with OCD to buy this book. It's so helpfull. I suffer from the most severe OCD (the most severe ever seen at the mental health clinic where I received treatment) and the method of self treatment taught in Brain Lock is just fantastic. It has helped me so much and opened my eyes to so much. I've under gone traditional treatment for the illness with a psychiatrist and then switched treatment (still under supervision) to the method taught in Brain Lock and came on tremendously. If you have OCD please buy this, it will help you so greatly : ) While I was under going treatment I met a number of people with OCD, one of whom found that this book didn't really suit him and found that Lee Baer's 'Imp of the Mind' was better for his particular obsessive thoughts, so don't feel you're beyond help if it doesn't suit you that much but please give it a try.

I can't encourage you enough to get this book, I really can't. If you don't really want to admit you have a problem and are umming and ahhring about picking it up, please make the decision and buy it. I'm so glad to have it, it's like my bible in my fight against the illness.

Just to say as well, if you have OCD, this means you are wonderfull person, a notch above the rest. Only wonderfull people get OCD. This is because of the over heightened sense of responsibility which is a prerequisite for the illness. I can't explain how true this is, I've met about 10 other people with the illness and it's always the same. Unfortunatley, very often OCD has a way of telling you that you're anything but wonderfull - but this is only the illness telling you this, it's not real.

If you have 'bad' thoughts (obsessive thoughts they're called, some people with OCD have these, others just do compulsions and many have both : ) ) These are not real thoughts, as hard as this is to believe sometimes, they're not. They're just false messages from part of you're brain which isn't working properly. Something you can fix with this book. Even if they're the most awfull, terrible things. The thoughts commonly lead you to believe you are the worst thing that you can ever imagine being but they're not true. If you're frightened you might do something awfull, you NEVER will because you don't want to. They're just false messages from the brain, they are not a reflection of who or what your are.

The method taught in the book has been proven to change the chemicals within the brain which fixes the broken part.

Sorry to go on but this illness can cause so much pain, please buy this book.

I wish you the very best of luck. It's not you, it's the OCD.

A quote from Brain Lock

Reattribute: This is my brain sending me a false message. I have a medical condition in which my brain doesn't adequatley filter my thoughts and experiences and I react inappropriatley to things that I know make no sense. But if I change the way I react to the false messages I change my brain.
