5.0 out of 5 stars It is a must for all newly diagnosed breast cancer patients, 28 Dec 2000
I had been waiting to get a copy of this book after it was recommended by a friend. It did not diasppoint. The story it relates is one of fear, hope, desperation, indeed all the feelings of newly diagnosed breast cancer patients. It takes you through the minefield which is diagnosis, treatment, treatment and more treatment and out the other side. The other side being the way in which we cope with LIVING with this disease. The changes it brings about in us as people and also the changes we NEED to bring about in order to help oursleves to survive. Please read it and you will cry and smile and laugh. For me the best words are at the end of the book as they could have come from my own lips - these are my words and not from the book but they are "cancer has bought me much more than it has taken away". The author has her own words and they MUST BE READ.

4.0 out of 5 stars Informative but raw, 26 Mar 2007

(REAL NAME)
I read this as part of a number of breast cancer autobiographies and I have to admit I found this the hardest to read. Betty speaks frankly about coping day to day with the reality of fighting breast cancer and does so in a way that doesn't sugar coat it in the saintly way other stories seem to. At times I found her honesty to be almost uncomfortable but also inspiring. This is an emotional story which will inspire some but also brings home in no uncertain terms the difficulty of dealing with this illness.

4.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring, brave and often funny, 14 May 2007
For some reason, I did not expect to find wit in a memoir of breast cancer. It is here in abundance in this gritty and admirable account that was groundbreaking when it was first published in 1976.
