Product Description

From the Author

Why the book was written, and to whom it is aimed.
Both of my daughters were turned off science at school--it was boring, and they hardly did any experiments themselves. But science is a practical subject, which has to be taught with a hands-on approach. Then it is fun. One of the reasons I wrote these two books on building dinosaurs was to provide a hands-on way of learning science. I purposely used readily available items too--like coat-hangers and garbage twist-ties--to make the project accessible. And in T.REX TO GO you'll learn everything from why lions have more stamina than crocodiles, to how cracks can cause airplanes to crash.

I wrote both books for adults, with youngsters in mind. Building a dinosaur makes a great family project, or school activity, and I've had lots of photographs and letters from those who have done it. Twelve year old A.J. from Massachusetts made a fine T.rex skeleton. He said the skull "looks great!...like it once belonged to a real Tyrannosaurus rex." The project was "Lots of fun! A real sense of accomplishment...". His step-mom said the two books "kept A.J. fascinated over two summers...". Judy, a high-school teacher from Colorado, had her class build a herd of Tyrannosaurus, following their success with Apatosaurus. She said the project, "was challenging, exciting, engaging to all--and fun. I can think of no better hands-on anatomy project."

I am really interested to hear how people get on with their dinosaurs, and would like to see photographs of their creations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Putting the fun back into shool science, 19 Feb 2004
By Sarah Earland (Portsmouth, England) - See all my reviews
This is a great book for teachers, parents, and kids! As a palaeontologist, I have worked in local schools promoting science education in new and unusual ways, and this book was exceptionally useful; providing ideas for activites, and examples that were easily understandable for children. At some point all kids are interested in dinosaurs, and this provides a great opportunity to learn about many aspects of science in a fun way.
Making a T-rex skeleton is an excellent project either for school or at home. Why stop at a T-rex? Herds of sauropod dinosaurs could follow as a holiday project. Studying dinosaurs and evolution at school not only fits with the current National Curriculum, but the subject has almost endless links to other key areas such as modern comparative anatomy, adaptations of animals to their environment, foodchains and ecosystems, chemistry and physiology, physics and bone stresses, classification of animals, evolution, processes of fossilization, and rock classifications e.t.c. and above all - great fun to be had!
Chris McGowan has a delightful writing style that is easy to read, neither overloading the novice with information, or patronising more knowledgeable readers. As ever, topics include illustrative examples from modern animal life and also engineering principles, making the study of prehistoric life both interesting and relevant.
A must for dinosaur enthusiasts young and old!
