3.0 out of 5 stars Not the book if you've only had one miscarriage, 14 Mar 2006
By A Customer
I bought this book after reading the reviews above and seeing it mentionned on a few miscarriage websites. I have to post a warning though that this is not a book to get if you are in the UK on the NHS and if you've only had one miscarriage.
The first caution is because it mentions a battery of tests that will be performed following a miscarriage and all sorts of meetings you will be able to conduct with your doctor. This sort of treatment really isn't common in the UK.
The second is because this book is filled with things that will scare the pants off you if you've had a miscarriage. You may have only had one, but following one, the odds are still in your favour of having a successful pregnancy. Read this book though and you will suddenly have new things to have nightmares about and new worries about conditions you probably don't have.
This book does give a good account of the information out there, but it isn't really geared for the UK market.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic book! I understand so much more now., 4 April 1998
By A Customer
The authors offer concise explanations and a greatdeal of hope with their discussion on miscarriages.Ob's have traditionally waited until at least thethird miscarriage to begin to investigate causes, but Dr. Scher believes one shouldn't have to go through repeated heartbreak to at least start thinking about preventing another. This book explains the mechanics of pregnancy and subsequentmiscarriage beautifully, in every day language. After my own experiences I found very little information on the possible causes and implications, both in literature and from my own doctor. Afterreading this book, I understood a great deal moreabout what was happening to me and perhaps why. For example, possible explanations are given for miscarriages at different times during pregnancy. I fit cleanly within one category, which reduced theprobable causes to three types of problems, each treatable. I knew what to ask my own doctor, and I understood his answers as they applied to me. The book is incredibly upbeat and optimistic despite the sad subject. In addition, Dr. Scheris an academician at a respected institution, and publishes in professional journals about the subject. His professional expertise and personalempathy make for a powerful presentation.

3.0 out of 5 stars A very positive book which encourages you to keep trying, 5 Jan 2000
I bought this book for my miscarriage support group as a resource for women who want to try for a baby, rather than for myself.

I like Jonathan's style of writing - it's clear and un-patronising, which means that you understand a lot of what's in the book, rather than end up feeling baffled by the science. I've read a lot of books about the causes of miscarriage and found it to be more readable than most.

There is hope for the future in this book, as the author doesn't seem to want to scare the reader into thinking that it's all too doomed. I was particularly interested in his thoughts about "intense" resting in early pregnancy, as this is an area usually glossed over in books in the causes of miscarriage.

I do feel that it needs to be brought up to date, however, as it is ten years since it was written, and there have been more developments in the research into the causes and treatment since then. It does have a slightly "dated" feel about it, for example his discussion about blighted ovum is readable but not longer felt to be accurate by other more recent authors. This is a pity as he has such an approachable style!
