4.0 out of 5 stars Stories from various stages in Dostoevsky's career., 23 Nov 2000
By A Customer
This collection contains eight stories that include: White Nights, Notes from the Underground, A Gentle Creature, The Gambler, A Disgraceful Affair, The Double, The Dream of a Ridiculous Man, and The Eternal Husband. The latter is rarely included in Dostoevsky short story collections, so it is good to have it here. Each work here has a tight organic structure, with moments of unfathomable lyrical beauty. "White Nights" narrates an insomniac wanderings and love affair during St. Petersburg's white nights, while "A Gentle Creature" relates a married girl's suicide, by jumping from the window with an icon in her hand. The themes which preoccupied Dostoevsky in the major novels are present here as well- occasionally spelled out in long monologues by the characters, rather than acted out as in "Crime and Punishment," "The Idiot" or "The Devils." This is a Dostoevskian trait, which might attract or dispirit readers. Their themes however have given birth to hundreds of critical writings and discussions. This is why probably "The Gambler," (which has haunted film director Martin Scorsese for ages) and "The Double" stand out more in narrative quality, rather than philosophical thesis proposed by the characters. Be it either way, "White Nights" and "A Gentle Creature" are monuments of the Dostoevsky's genius, that can convince any first time reader, into reading the other major works. A comprehensive collection, at a very good price.
