4.0 out of 5 stars At the center of the heart, 1 Jun 2004
In this journal Merton goes a step further in his search for love. After years of seeking solitude he finally gets permission from his abbott to live in a small hermitage. Yet at the same time he struggle with emotions not earlier feelt. The journals describe, all seven of them, different aspects on Mertons vocation and the monastic vows. In this volume it is the vow of chastity that becomes the focus. He falls in love with a nurse and the journal is written during a very dramatic period in his life. As for all of the books in the same series it is well edited and easy to follow. It is extra interesting for the Merton fan because there are some appendix material that gives a deeper insight in Mertons personality. This is a book with great tension and an undispensible piece in the understanding of Thomas Merton.
