5.0 out of 5 stars Buy this amazing book and treat yourself to a great story., 6 Jan 2001
This amazing vision from C.S. Lewis is still extremely relevant to all today. Not only does it make you confront your own beliefs in a most natural way, but it is clever enough to do this behind a wonderful story. This book becomes more and more appropriate, and should be read by everybody. Read it!

5.0 out of 5 stars A book that every Christian should read, 20 April 2004

This review is from: Selected Poems (Audio Cassette)
His Abysmal Sublimity Under-Secretary Screwtape is an old experiencedtempter, a highly respected expert in his field. And so, Screwtape takestime out of his hellishly busy schedule to send letters of advice to hisnephew, Wormwood, who is shepherding along his first human. This book is acollection of Screwtape's letters, giving sound advice on how a Christiancan be steered away from Heaven, and safely delivered to Hell. Along theway, the reader is treated to some of the most profound Christianreasoning that I have ever read!
To put it succinctly, this book is without a doubt one the greatest (ifnot THE greatest) works of practical Christian living that was everwritten. C.S. Lewis's use of a demon giving advice to his nephew is simplyinspired, allowing him to mix deep theology and reasoning with upbeat (andoffbeat) humor. I loved the book, and I love this audio version of it -John Cleese does an excellent job of playing Screwtape, adding in theemotions the role deserves, and now I can't even imagine anyone else doingit.
This is a great book, one that every Christian should read (or listen to)at least once in his or her life, and maybe even read on a regular basis.I've listened to it five times in a row, and want to hear it some more. This is practical Christianity!

5.0 out of 5 stars A spiritual classic - letters from a senior to a junior devil, 9 Oct 2008
By Marshall Lord (Whitehaven, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
This review is from: The Screwtape Letters (Hardcover)
Although it is recognisably set at the time of the second world war, this tale is a timeless classic.

The story tells of the salvation of a human soul, as seen from an infernal persective, told through the letters written to a junior devil called Wormwood, who is the "tempter" assigned to lead the central human character astray. The author of the letters is supposedly his uncle Screwtape, who is an important devil, indeed the Under-secretary of a department.

Just as there is a legend that heaven assigns a guardian angel to look after each human, this book assumes that there is a tempter assigned by Hell to try to lead each person to damnation. Wormwood, the junior tempter to whom the letters are written, is trying to lead a young man in England between about 1939 and 1942 away from God.

Obviously all the advice in the book is the wrong way round - what Screwtape welcomes, we should dread, and vice versa.

Includes a huge amount of humorous but insightful commentary on the human condition: most readers will recognise in the behaviour which Screwtape advises Wormwood to encourage some of the silly mistakes which we and others have made.

Obviously this book is of most relevance to the Christian reader but there will be readers of other faiths or none who nevertheless enjoy reading this and can learn something from it.

A unique book and one which I highly recommend
