5.0 out of 5 stars The book is always better than the film..., 19 Nov 2004
By thefilmfan "thefilmfan" (West Malling, KENT) - See all my reviews
I went to the cinema to watch the film Man on Fire starring Denzel Washington with high expectations after seeing the trailer. I was not disappointed, a great film indeed, however, I am one of these people who likes to read the book to gauge the differences for myself. On this occasion I bought the book after I saw the film and read it while the film was still fresh in the memory. The main difference are that it was originally set in Italy rather than Mexico like the film. It gives more background on John Creasy our bodyguard hero, so you can understand fully why he wrestles with his demons and alcohol. Books are always better for this reason, you can fully explore the ins and outs and develop an affinity with the characters. I was very pleased with the book and would recommend this to my friends and family and I urge you to purchase this well written gem to add to your collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Book I've Ever Read., 14 Oct 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Man On Fire (Paperback)
This has got to be one of, if not THE best book i've ever read. It is extremely well written and you get the idea that the author knows exactly what he's talking about with the way he describes weopans and how they are used. You really do get to like the little girl that is in the story and when whatever happens to her happens (i don't want to spoil it) it really sickens and saddens you. When you realise that her death (more to it than that) has given Creasy a desire to be almost reborn in hatred and revenge, you cheer him on. The ending is absolutely brilliant and the little twist at the end warmed my heart. The story doesn't end there either, there are more in the series, each one better than the last. I only read horror, but these have become my favourite series of books, highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A man on fire won't burn. He'll explode., 24 Feb 2005
By Hugh Smith - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Man On Fire (Paperback)
I first heard of this book when AJ Quinnell had an interview with the Guardian newspaper, and from the sypnopsis of the book, I thought it sounded pretty good. I have previously been a fan of thriller novels, such as the Tom Clancy books, but this book amazed me.
The first few chapters are pretty slow-going, but when it gets going, it's very exiting.
When a former Soldier of Fortune; Creasy, gets a job protecting the daughter of a wealthy Italian family, he forms a shield of resistance towards everyone. However, as time goes on Pinta (the young girl) weasals her way into his heart. So when a group of kidnappers snatch her from Creasy outside her school, he goes on a rampage to kill everyone and everything that was in any way involved.
The writing is so effective, that you care about the characters, you want Creasy to be triumphant, you will feel his pain, and you WILL cry at the end.
You also feel that the Author, AJ Quinnell, knows what he is talking about when he describes weapons, the Italian crime Labyrinth, and Creasy's military history. This makes the novel even more compelling

This is a great book with a heart, a brain, and a nasty streak a mile wide.
