Product Description

Synopsis

Conservative evangelicals have hugged their Bibles, worn their flag pins, and self-righteously attempted to co-opt any discussion of religion and politics. Liberals are embarrassed to discuss their religious beliefs in public and attempt to avoid the subject altogether. Is there an appropriate way Christians and other morally concerned people can express their faith and values in the public debate while still supporting the constitutional separation of church and state? We've become great at pursuing our individual "spiritualities," but in the process may have lost sight of the power of religious belief for motivating social reform. What we need is something akin to the social politics of Jesus: speaking out for peace, justice, the poor and disenfranchised, while speaking out against oppressive government and rampant commercialism. Drawing on his experiences with the poor, with preachers, and with presidents, Wallis points a way for every person to draw on their faith and spiritual tradition to do their part, offering practical tips for how one can enact the spiritual ethic in their own public lives.

Wallis finds the current conservative, liberal, and libertarian options out-of-step with the desires of most Americans untenable. Wallis offers a fourth option, "The Common Good," that would represent those who are traditional on issues of moral character, personal responsibility, sexual integrity, and family values (without scape-goating any group like single parents or homosexuals), while being very progressive on issues like poverty and racial justice. This option affirms good stewardship of the earth and its resources, supports gender equality, and looks first to peacemaking and conflict-resolution when it comes to foreign policy questions. At the spiritual heart of this option is linking one's personal ethics to social justice. A prophetic book, it provides a scathing indictment of American society and the skewed values our government seems to endorse and implement. A hopeful book, it offers a platform for bringing the spiritual and political together, offering an alternative to the conservative, liberal, and libertarian options currently available to Americans.

5.0 out of 5 stars A case for political review, 28 Feb 2005
By Sancho Mahle (Charlotte, USA) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
This is one of the best political books on the analysis of contemporary US politics. Jim Wallis successfully opened our eyes. In God's Politics, the author dissected the problems of the gross misinterpretation of Christian Ethic by the Religious Right and the Republican party, as well as the little attachment to religious discourse by the Democratic Party. Through his fair and balanced analysis of the two parties, Wallis made a strong conclusion and came up with suggestions on several things that should be done if we want to see a new dawn in political discussions. This is a must read for Americans and the rest of the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Arch Bishop Desmond Tutu praises it too, 3 May 2006
By Carl (Virginia) - See all my reviews

I often asked myself during the last 2004 elections: Wouldn't somebody write something deep about faith and politics from a progressive line of thinking? And then came Jim Wallis with this book, as a timely gift to America. His book is the perfect answer for those who are searching for "THE RIGHT" political leadership that is steeped in genuine Christian beliefs. In the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, it was the leadership of the anti-war and civil rights movements led by the ideas of Rev. Martin Luther King, progressive clergy and nuns, made many of the social, moral and ethical changes possible. The religious right provided the leadership in the 1980s and today, it is the compassionate conservatives who with the religious right have virtually hijacked the Bible and made it a Republican idea. Their stand is giving The USA a bad name in the eyes of the rest of the world.
In "God's politics", the author successfully presented a powerful thought-provoking book that both believers and nonbelievers should read. Its dialectical approach puts a challenge to readers of both the right and left. They would be forced to think constructively and critically about the path and effects of cotemporary US at home and abroad. To me, God is neither Republican nor Democrat, and being pro-faith means committing oneself to helping the poor and needy and those who are being discriminated upon. This is a book for those who are searching for or have found Jesus Christ. Both Democrats and Republicans qualify.

While Republicans should read this book and correct their misconceptions, liberals should read it too and learn from the author, so that they can be bettered prepared for 2008.
