2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 1 Dec 2005
By A Customer
I was looking forward to getting this book as I was desperate for some new imput and inspiration on how to live with my thyroid condition (I've been at both ends of the spectrum of thyroid problems). The book is just a rehash of the information available on Mary Shomon's website. I couldn't find anything new. My own experience has led me to believe that keeping things simple is the best way to treat an underactive thyroid. A healthy, balanced diet and regular exersize is the best way to ensure thyroxine uptake and therefore ensure a more balanced thyroid.

3.0 out of 5 stars The books you MUST read instead:, 27 Mar 2009

(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
The MUST-READ book on low thyroid is "Stop the Thyroid Madness", passionate and comprehensive. I also recommend the book "Iodine: Why You Need It, Why You Can't Live Without It" by Brownstein via Amazon.com

Now also recommending the even newer "Why Do I Still Have Thyroid Symptoms?" which explains that if taking natural thyroid still leaves you with a number of symptoms, it is an autoimmune disease, not a primary thyroid problem. Based thoroughly on scientific research, this new book gives the low down on what your doctor never hears at his/her pharmaceutical sponsored education events. It is not a simplified single programme or test for everyone type of book but is based on your unique expression and genetics.

1.0 out of 5 stars Really Disappointing, 17 Jun 2009
By Ms. C. M. Hough "ziggy1234" (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I know what its like to be a hypothyroid sufferer and I also appreciate what its like when your GP sends you away and tells you that you are beginning early menopause and I can understand how, out of desperation you will log on to amazon searching for information. Having read this book from front to back, I am of a very strong opinion that people who are not qualified doctors should refrain from writing books which are complete and utter drivvel. I had a full thyroid removal and have suffered from hypothyroid difficulties which is when I bought this book. Unfortunately the author recommends a ton of vitamens and health supplements to improve your thyroids performance, if you dont have a thyroid to improve then this book is not for you. She mentioned a ton of symptoms which I myself suffer with but not really what to do about them. She discusses the fact that, in general, GPs do not spot and act on your hypothyroid issues, she also talks about taking your tablets in the morning way before food and which foods to avoid in the morning etc. In brief, her dietry advice is cut out caffeine, sugar and fat and increase your excercise. The one piece of good advice she gave is to compose a list of all your symptoms so you can confront your doctor with all your symptoms in one go.

IF YOU HAVE PROBLEMS WITH YOUR THYROID DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!! ASK YOUR GP TO REFER YOU TO AN ENDOCRINOLOGIST!!! these people are the real experts in hormonal problems and metabolic issues. I saw Professor Clayton who told me to take my tablets on an empty stomach in the evening, instead of the morning and my problems have improved 10 fold already.
