Synopsis
The Colombian-American actor and comedian traces his childhood in Queens, early work on the New York comedy club circuit, relationships with fellow celebrities, and stage and screen successes.
About the Author
John Leguizamo was born in Colombia in 1964. When he was four, his family immigrated to the US where they settled in Queens, NY. He began his career as a standup comedian in various New York clubs, and made his television debut with a 1986 turn on Miami Vice. Leguizamo burst onto the Hollywood scene with roles in Carlito's Way and Super Mario Brothers. In 1995, his pioneer all-Latino variety show, House of Buggin' received two Emmy nominations. That same year he received a Golden Globe nomination for his performance in To Wong Foo: Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar. Leguizamo's Broadway debut followed in 1998 with his third one-man show, Freak. A critical and commercial success, Freak won an Emmy when it was shown on TV. More film roles followed and the ALMA (American Latino Media Arts) Entertainer of the Year award in 2003. This year (2005), the versatile and prolific performer joins the cast of ER.
