5.0 out of 5 stars A superb finish to the trilogy, with a twist, 3 May 2003
The final book of this trilogy begins with a spine-chilling episode when the wizards practice their cloaking spell against the Dark outside the keep of Renweth. There's no going back in until daylight - those doors are barred.... Once again, BH grabs attention from the start.

There's more to this book than fear, though. BH has thought about what happens when a civilisation breaks down suddenly. There are factions and fighting - tensions here between fantical priests, proud and corrupt warlords and business people, and magicians, with whom the reader is invited to identify as a force for good. And although Rudy and Gill have been in this world for a long time now, they still have a perspective from another universe. This is both valuable to the situation at the Keep of Renweth, and it gives the reader more chances to identify with them. Whenever we read about a different universe in SF/Fantasy, we arrive at our understanding of the new universe through our perspective of our own. It's intriguing to have an author do this via the characters and plot, and it allows BH's humour to shine through as well.

There are unexpected twists to the plot, and a tense finale, bound together with BH's clear and gripping style. But if you haven't read the first 2 books, you don't want to start from here.....
