5.0 out of 5 stars Very helpful for all wannabe TV/Film writers out there., 17 April 2001
By A Customer
Before i read this book i had no idea what to write let alone where to begin. Now after reading it i have writen two scripts and both are being considered. The book tells you what you need to write, how to write it, and give you web address' to send your finished scripts to. The book also tells you what not to write and what areas of genre to consider, over all this is the best book you'll find.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappoint for all but the most basic beginner., 26 Sep 2003
I looked forward to receiving this book, having had it recommended to me by a respected writer. Unfortunately, I found most of the advice that it offered both obvious and trite. Despite reading it cover to cover, I found nothing particular in it that I did not already know.

There are far better screenwriting books out there including Syd Field's "The Screenwriter's Workbook" and "Screenplay: The Foundations of Screenwriting" as well as many valuable resources on the Internet.

Only buy this book, if you are brand new to screenwriting and know absolutely nothing.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Guide To Screenwriting!, 11 Aug 2004
By no1filmaddict (UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
There are two things that i love to do; write stories, and watch films and so i thought why not combine these two hobbies and write a screenplay. Although i have done loads of writing i had no idea about how to write a screenplay or where on earth to start, and what to include etc. That was until i brought myself a copy of this excellent book, which is part of the 'Idiots Guide' collection.

Written by someone who has been there, done that and got the T-Shirt, Skip Press who is a Sliver Medal winner at the New York International Film Festival, really knows what he's talking about and you get the inpression when you are reading it.

The book itself is split up into five parts, which is then split down into a further twenty eight parts covering everything that you could possibly imagine about screenwriting (for a beginner anyway). It gives helpful examples of screenplay structures, expert advice on how to build a screen writing career, a detailed history of screenwriting, and easy ways to tell if your ideas will sell.

All the way through the book in the margins there are a number of helpful boxes; 'Skips Tips' which gives tips on the current topic, 'It's Not For Us' which outlines potential pifalls and mistakes that are made regularly, 'Script Notes' which translates certain words used by Hollywood as they have there own language, and finally 'Hollywood Heat' which gives you 'i bet you didn't know' infomation on Hollywood.

Overall, 'The Complete Idiot's Guide To Screenwriting' in my opinion is a really good referance guide to anyone who is thinking about having ago at screenwriting. I'm not sure how useful a more experienced screenwriter looking for a deeper understanding would find it, but for a beginner like me, it was simply wonderful with everything set out clearly and in a way that won't be too daunting.
