An amusing and extremely educational guide., 13 Nov 2001

The Complete Idiot's Guide to the Kama Sutra is a no-nonsense and extremely educational guide written with a sense of humour. Whether you are an expert on sexual matters or a total beginner this is the best book I've ever read on matters of the heart, soul, sex, and relationships. Its layout makes is easy to look up any particular aspect of sex you want to learn more about. It's divided into six Parts, and then each Part is broken up into easy to digest chapters making it possible to dip in where preferred, if you don't feel like reading it from start to finish. There are short quizzes which can be very self-revealing, and the Sanskrit terminology included for genitalia will give couples use of a refreshing vocabulary in their love play. Some of the exercises at the beginning of the book will definitely make most couples laugh, but as the authors write, you are definitely on the right track if you are laughing and also engaging in some aspect of sex. Each chapter contains a simple introduction in note form, includes Sutra Sayings, Kama Knowledge (Kama means pleasure, Sutra rules) suggestions from Dr. Josie (a well-known American agony aunt) cautionary signposts (what NOT to do in a given situation) Sutrology (explanations), and at the end The Least You Need to Know, which is a brief summary of the chapter. My only criticism of the whole book is that I sometimes found the Sutrology boxes somewhat insulting as they explain 'difficult' words like caste and polygamy. I found that The Complete Idiot's Guide to the Kama Sutra is an amusing, easy to follow guide which has something for everybody whether single or in a relationship. This book is written with sensitivity and understanding and can be used throughout a lifetime to enable us to have a sex life that does not become mundane or boring. There are lots of useful and soulful tips. The twenty-first century's focus on soul and spirituality is celebrated in this book, which is based on a script written over 2,000 years ago. That the Western world can learn from the East is manifest throughout, especially with regard to our perceptions of pleasure. This book encourages us to see our bodies and minds as tools which can give us indescribable pleasure. For years I had been putting off buying the original because I thought it would be too obtuse, and I was delighted to find this version. Now, I find myself no longer wanting the original, as I cannot imagine anything better than this book. I have no hesitation in awarding it five stars.
