1.0 out of 5 stars Not Helpful, Poorly Written, 12 Oct 2001
By A Customer
I have to agree with the other poor review. This book seems to miss several key points. Firstly there is obvious confusion between 'creative' writing in terms of exploring and developing a talent and the professional aspect of writing for publication. The yardstick here seems to be that if you can generate an idea and write it you are a creative writer. The focus on American publishing is not helpful to UK readers and some of the 'humour' doesn't translate. Finally, the pedantic and dull prose suggests the author hasn't much empathy with the subject or is making an almighty ironic statement. My old copy is in an Oxfam bookshop. 'Nuff said

1.0 out of 5 stars Unless you're completely clueless, don't waste your money, 1 Aug 2001
By A Customer
This book was boring and a waste of time. I don't understand how it's gotten five-star ratings! The author makes attempts at humour whilst trying to cover what is pretty much an impossible topic (I am not sure you will ever find a wonderful book on 'how to write', although there are many better than this).

Maybe I'm being harsh, but I felt the author tried to cover too much. The book seemed to be a bit simplistic and offered me little help at all - oh, and it's American, so all the hints on getting published were pretty useless too.

If you're going to buy a 'how to write' book, try and get something more specialist. Failing that, just write anything and buy a Writer's Yearbook for details on how to get published. The editors will probably have more suggestions about your work than this book did.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best reference book on all aspects of writing!, 8 Jul 1998
By A Customer
As a professional writer (articles and novels), I bought this book last year for general reference. It's far more than that. The book covers every aspect of writing, including peotry, scriptwriting, novel, short-story, agents and life as a writer. I recommend it to anyone doing a writing course - I bought a second copy recently as a birthday gift to my niece who wants to be a writer but doesn't know what to write. This book is an eye-opener for novice writers and a refresher course for seasoned writers.
