5.0 out of 5 stars Not the best, but the first in the saga, 17 Dec 2009
Loved this book when I was younger and I am looking to getting my own kids hooked on the Bagthorpe Saga as soon as they are old enough to love the irony. As an introduction to a rabidly real disfunctional modern (well 30 years ago) family, nothing can beat it. The story is good enough to get the kids interested but book two (Absolute Zero) is probablu the best, and the next two stories are classics. The series goes on and on, and some of the later titles are heaven for Guardian readers with a sense of the ridiculous, but these early stories are great for intelligent kids.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fine humour for all ages, 7 April 2008
By A. Wasenczuk "speedbird2" (Hampshire, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The thing with the Bagthorpes isn't so much the plot as the way it's written. The use (and skilful abuse!) of language, and the observational humour, are second to none and quite worthy of envy. Kind of reminds me of the artful and enduring farce of Alan Ayckbourn. And cos the plot is incidental you can read it again and again and never spoil it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nostalgia, 27 Sep 2005
By James (Birmingham, West Midlands United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
I have just heard that author Helen Cresswell has dies. Well, I am an adult now, and it has been a long time since I read this book, but I have memories of crying with laughter when I read it, and thinking it was the funniest thing I have ever read. I have only given it 4 stars as it is such a long time since I read it.

If you are a child you might just find you love this, if you are an adult you might find that this keeps your child busy for a few hours!
