My first Strugatsky novel was "Roadside Picnic" which is one of their best received works and is one of my favourites.

The novel tells the story of Maxim who is 20 years old and a member of the Independent Reconnaissance Unit. What that entails is not all that clear or important. The book starts with him having to crash land on a planet which turns out to be a fairly grim place where the human population has survived nuclear wars but the landscape is strewn with the remnants of military activity. There is a repressive and evil regime in power (perhaps a bit like the Soviet Union used to be?)

I wondered at times whether it would (in typical genre manner) turn out that this planet was really Earth and Maxim was an Alien but that would be a bit simplistic for these writers. Maxim is considerably more advanced than present day man but is a bit green.. He seems to get swept up in events and things happen to him rather than he making things happen.

It is a readable book and uses action to keep the plot moving but says a bit more about the human condition than the average SF novel.
