Product Description

Synopsis

Designed to meet the needs of engineering students, this text provides an overview of optic design and examines engineering applications. Traditional ray and wave (physical) models illustrate optical phenomena, and key design elements such as fibres, lasers and holography are covered. After an historical introduction, the text addresses such topics as the laws of relection and refraction, the two ways in which matrices can be written, an introduction to optical design, the optical wave model, and interferometry and diffraction effects. The book presents the matrix form for treating optical systems. The final four chapters cover applications, including fibre optical systems, linear systems and image recording. The text treats optics as a linear system, linking it with engineering. Four appendices cover matrices, Fourier methods, the derivation of the fundamental diffraction laws and the treatment of waves in material media.
