1.0 out of 5 stars The first Clancy book I haven't been bothered to finish., 8 Jun 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: SSN (Paperback)
This is the first time I have not finished a Clancy book. It is complete nonsense, with no sense of suspense, mystery, or even a half decent plot. I realise that this based on a computer game, but it is nothing more than an American nuclear submarine blowing everything up in its sights, with no story or even a perceived threat to its own existence. Another reviewer made a reference to the poor quality of Clancy books which are 'based on' or 'created by' etc. I agree - stick to the Jack Ryan books and you won't be dissapointed; otherwise, avoid them like the plague. I wouldn't even give this book 1 star, but that choice was not available. The worst book I have read in many years!

2.0 out of 5 stars The Hunt for Red October it isn't, 7 Jan 2004
By Ben Thompson "BB42" (Coventry) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: SSN (Paperback)
I've been a fan of Tom Clancy for almost a decade, and having enjoyed his other computer game related book (Rainbow Six) I thought I'd give this one a try. I have to admit to being thoroughly unimpressed, it doesn't 'feel' like a Clancy novel, each chapter seems disconected from the others, often ignoring decisions and events covered previously.
The story concerns a lone American submarine effortlessly destroying almost the entire Chinese sub surface fleet, getting to the point where I was no longer even interested in how individual scuffles were won, and only held on to the end to see how it finished.
In short, while a fan of the game might enjoy this book, a regular reader of Tom Clancy novels would probably find it a little to shallow.

1.0 out of 5 stars Why did he do it ! ! ! ! (Must be a bit short of cash), 16 Feb 2002
This review is from: SSN (Paperback)
Of all the Clany books about. This one even rates below the Op center and Power play, and thats saying somthing.Things just seem to happen with no reason why they do and they just seem to win,and thats it.No story detail, just technical detals.Out of principal I read book, but that was just because I spent the money on it.If a Avid Clancy reader, then avoid at all cost.
