Praise for Ya Yas in Bloom: 'Uplifting, uproarious, saucy and smart, the Ya-Ya sisterhood sequel lives up to the highest expectations' Booklist 'Essential for Ya-Ya fans' Heat 'This is a glorious read that takes you into the heart of small-town America' Good Book Guide 'Continuing the tradition of feisty American girlfriends who pull together in a crisis -- Thelma and Louise, The Steel Magnolias -- this is a beauty of a read' Good Housekeeping

Product Description

For longtime Ya-Ya fans, as well as the lucky ones discovering Wells for the first time, comes Wells's new standalone novel about the pull of first love, the power of home, and everyday magic. "My name is Calla Lily Ponder. I was born in 1953, in La Luna, Louisiana." So begins Calla Lily's journey through her magical childhood in La Luna, a small town named after the sparkling river from which Calla draws her strength time and time again. It's in La Luna where Calla Lily discovers her talent for fixing people's hair--learned at the side of her talented and loving mother--but also the transformative gift of first love. A series of tragic events leads Calla to search for a fresh start in a beauty school in New Orleans, the wild and colourful city that allows Calla to flourish into adulthood, and to realize her "healing hands" can do much more than fix damaged hair.

1.0 out of 5 stars Truly Terrible, 11 Aug 2009
By A. Martin (Lyon France) - See all my reviews
This book is so disappointing. I loved the Ya Ya books and was so looking forward to reading it. It's full of stereotyped characters in stereotyped situations, there's no plot, the dialogue is incredibly false, there are very few moments of true emotion. I rushed right through it, waiting for the moment when it would get better but alas.... I got to the end and I was relieved to be finished. No one did their job - neither the writer nor the editors nor the publisher. I feel betrayed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good, sad and funny read., 17 Aug 2009
By LEP "LEP" (Halesowen, England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
Well it just goes to show how readers differ in taste, because unlike the other two reviewers I liked this book. It has been a long time since I read The YaYa Sisterhood, so it wasn't fresh in my mind to hold up as a comparison.

This book is both funny and extremely sad in places. Cala Lily's mother is somewhat Bohemian, eccentric and somewhat fae (although the latter is not really the word I'm searching for). The Ponders' bring up their two sons and one daughter, Cala Lily to be kind to others and true to themselves. They live in the small town of La Luna, along with other eccentric characters.

The book takes Cala Lily from about the age of 4 up to 30. Like the Ya Ya's, Cala Lily has close girl friends who see each other through problems. She also has close male friends, one of which is their next door neighbours son, Tucker. They start off not liking each other as children and then fall in love as teenagers and thinking that they will always be together.

The relationship between Cala Lily and her mother is very strong and she needs the remembered strength of this relationship when tragedies hit her.

I think that this book is very worth reading.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 10 Aug 2009
By Mrs. N. Vella "nvella" (London UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I loved the Ya ya Sisterhood and the sequel, so was delighted to get this book. A real disppointment - sickly sweet with nothing to ameliorate the treacle. Even the "dark" bits were terribly Pollyanna-ish.
