Product Description

Product Description

The first of a new series of young fiction by Jenny Valentine, winner of the Guardian Children's Fiction Prize for her debut novel, Finding Violet Park. IGGY AND ME is a series of family stories featuring the mishaps and shenanigans of the irrepressible 5-year-old Iggy as seen through the eyes of her big sister Flo. Funny and endearing, each chapter is a complete and satisfying story in its own right, perfect for newly-confident readers to enjoy alone, or for reading aloud at bedtime. Illutrated throughout in with black & white line drawings by Joe Berger, who was nominated for the Booktrust Early Years Award for his picture book, Bridget Fidget.

From the Back Cover

Iggy is my litte sister.

Which means I am Iggy's big sister.

This is tricky, because sometimes Iggy is naughty.

And at other times, Iggy is VERY naughty!

But we do agree on one thing.

We like being sisters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent first full length book for 4 year old, 4 Jan 2010
My 4 year old can't read properly for herself yet, but she is starting to be disappointed when the standard type '4 year old' book ends. She still enjoys them but she sees her older brother with stories that 'carry on' from night to night.
I was in two minds when I purchased Iggy and Me for her for Christmas, but thought, if it is too old for her now it will do her later, so I won't really have lost anything.
As it turns out though it was an excellent choice. The story is well written, with characters everyone can relate to, and even though it's a far cry from stories with colour illustrations on every page, she didn't seem at all bothered by the lack of pictures (there are some black & white illustrations throughout the book, but not what she's used to). Every chapter got giggles from both my children (my older child is a 10 year old boy, I think Iggy reminds him of his 4 year old sister).
My 4 year old was so disappointed the night we finished the last chapter, she kept insisting we must have missed bits, because long as the book must be to a 4 year old, it's apparently so enjoyable, it's not long enough.
I would thoroughly recommend this book, and since it's voiced by Iggy's older sister I would say the age range for this book is probably quite wide.
There was not a part of this book that my 4 year old did not understand, and anything that did come up in the book had Iggy say she didn't know what it meant and her Sister or parents explained it to her. I don't think there are many books out there this length written in the quite the same way, and even though the language was easy enough for my 4 year old to understand at every point what was going on, it didn't speak down to her and it didn't sound juvenile.
I see from the back of the book there's another Iggy book due out some time this year, so I'll definitely be buying that one for her too.
Iggy is now my daughter's favorite story. I'm so glad I chose this as her first proper chapter book, as I think it's important to establish a love of books early on, and this one has certainly helped my little girl with that.
