1.0 out of 5 stars Not Recommended, 1 Jan 2009
Dreadful, poorly constructed and badly written book with an unsympathetic and annoying protagonist who had no redeeming features, instantly forgettable supporting characters, endlessly boring dialogue and a reveal of 'Midsomer Murders' quality involving a person you didn't even know existed until close to the end!

The introduction of an entirely new sub-plot (apparently to explain the main character's behaviour) with only a few chapters to go seemed ridiculous to me, particularly as it could have easily been elaborated upon and used for another novel. In fact, that plot was potentially more interesting than pretty much everything that had preceeded it in this book! As it was, it was far too rushed and seemed to have been crammed on to the end of the story almost as an afterthought.

I shan't be reading another book by this author again, unless I'm truly desperate!

2.0 out of 5 stars Blood Runs Cold, 10 Jan 2009
By molko (Hampshire, UK) - See all my reviews

Having enjoyed Alex Barclay's two previous books Darkhouse and The Caller I was quite looking forward to this, the latest release from Barclay. However I have to admit that 'Blood Runs Cold' is pretty terrible.
The main character Ren is highly un preoffesional and i'm shocked that she was held in such high regards in the FBI. The rest of the characters were so hard to keep track of due to the fact that they were all so one dimensional and un interesting.
The plot was plodding along at a steady pace until the end and it all got a bit confusing and it was hard to keep track of what was going on. Not a very good book, a good story but very poorly executed with some pretty dismal characters. Save your time and money and try one of her earlier books instead if you havent already.

1.0 out of 5 stars What a waste, 12 Jan 2009

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
With 'Darkhouse', the author got off to a reasonable start and I was keen enough to read the follow-on 'The Caller', although this one did not live up to expectations. Regrettably 'Blood Runs Cold' is even worse.

It seems the author puts down words and then tries to make them fit the story. Frankly, this book was so poor that I had to bin it halfway through, which is unfortunate.

The storyline is disjointed, pages filled with not very humourous banter which soon becomes tedious and the characters so badly portrayed that it is impossible to have any empathy with any of them. I couldn't work out if this was meant to be a biography of a ridiculous female detective or a less than gripping meant-to-be thriller.

I regret that this will be the last book by this author that I waste good money on.
