Review
'Make no bones about it: Skullduggery Pleasant serves up a thoroughly satisfying blend of humour, magic and adventure. Once you've met Stephanie and Skullduggery, you'll be clamouring for a sequel.' Rick Riordan 'Hugely enjoyable -- a thrill-a-minute adventure.' Jonathan Stroud

Product Description
Get ready for the biggest NEW publishing phenomenon of 2007! "So you won't keep anything from me again?" He put his hand to his chest. "Cross my heart and hope to die." "Okay then. Though you don't actually have a heart," she said. "I know." "And technically, you've already died." "I know that too." "Just so we're clear." Stephanie's uncle Gordon is a writer of horror fiction. But when he dies and leaves her his estate, Stephanie learns that while he may have written horror, it certainly wasn't fiction. Pursued by evil forces intent on recovering a mysterious key, Stephanie finds help from an unusual source -- the wisecracking skeleton of a dead wizard. When all hell breaks loose, it's lucky for Skulduggery that he's already dead. Though he's about to discover that being a skeleton doesn't stop you from being tortured, if the torturer is determined enough. And if there's anything Skulduggery hates, it's torture! Will evil win the day? Will Stephanie and Skulduggery stop bickering long enough to stop it? One thing's for sure: evil won't know what's hit it.

4.0 out of 5 stars My Name Is Valkyrie Cain, 15 April 2007
I thought this book was a lot of fun. A plot that twists and turns and keeps the reader entertained. Characters are strong and the relationship between Stephanie and Skulduggery is especially well done. Dialogue is excellent, it crackles along, ensuring the pace never flags.

There are some downsides. At times the novel reads more like a screenplay and parts of the story seem almost rushed, with elements thrown in but not always properly developed.

I'm sure Skulduggery Pleasant will be a hit with older children and teens. The author deserves success as he has come up with an original and intriguing character. But, I can't shake the feeling that the publishers have rushed this book out with the intention of establishing Skulduggery before a Harry Potter shaped hole opens up in the children's book market.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dark Fun, 1 April 2008

This review is from: Skulduggery Pleasant (Paperback)
This is a dark yet witty story about a detective who is actually a skeleton. How Skulduggery met with this fate is a tragic tale that may be upsetting to younger readers. There are also some gruesome torture scenes that may be unsuitable for the younger readers too. Having said that this book is hugely entertaining and is sure to be a massive big seller. It revolves around 12-year-old Stephanie, who inherits the home of her author Uncle on his death. She spends a night in the house alone and is attacked by someone from the `other' world. Soon she is fighting for her life but Skulduggery comes to her rescue. From there on the pair have adventure after adventure battling trolls and evil villains who are trying to find a sceptre that will enable them to rule the world. This book is filled with quirky characters, action and hilarity. I can't recommend it highly enough, especially to fans of Eoin Colfer, JKR and Holly Black

5.0 out of 5 stars for a blissfully peaceful half-term!, 24 Oct 2007

This review is from: Skulduggery Pleasant (Paperback)
I bought this for my eleven year old daughter on Monday and haven't heard a squeak out of her since! Its now Wednesday afternoon and I fear she has lost the power of speech. Seriously though, Lucy thinks this is fantastic, she's almost finished it which means it must have been blooming good as she has been known to abandon books half way through if they're not very gripping. Now she's just got to wait till April for the next one.

4.0 out of 5 stars A lot of fun
I really enjoyed this (and so did my two sons). The wise-cracking detective Skulduggery (apart from being dead) is very funny indeed. Stephanie is a thoroughly modern heroine.
