Review

'Nobody writes modern fantasy like Eddings or as well ! Eddings is at the top with the very best' Vector' 'This sixth volume in the Belgariad tells the full story of the legendary sorcerer Belgarath with all the verve and pace we've come to expect from these authors' The Dark Side 'My ideal summer read! Having enjoyed the entire ten-book serial, I was delighted to be able to read this latest addition as it not only provides fantastic escapism in itself, but, being a prequel, will make my re-reading of the other books all the more fascinating.' The Irish Times 'Offers an absorbing storyline and some memorable characters as, once again, the authors touch all the right fantasy bases, with warring gods, political intrigues, supernatural creatures and appealingly human magicians involved in a titanic war over the course of seven millennia. Eddings fans will no doubt snatch this novel off the shelves while readers new to the authors' world won't find a more appropriate place to begin exploring it.' Publishers Weekly 'There's no denying the Eddingses' offerings do entertain. This novel is for fantasy fans fed up with more fusty fare, or for anyone who likes mischief and merriment.' West Australian 'There's no denying the Eddingses' offerings do entertain. This novel is for fantasy fans fed up with more fusty fare, or for anyone who likes mischief and merriment.' Product Description

The life story of Belgararth the Sorcerer: his own account of the great struggle that went before the Belgariad and the Malloreon, when gods stills walked the land. Here is the full epic story of Belgarath, the great sorcerer learned in the Will and the Word on whom the fate of the world depends. Only Belgarath can tell of those near-forgotten times when Gods still walked the land: he is the Ancient One, the Old Wolf, his God Aldur's first and most-favoured disciple. Using powers learned over the centuries Belgarath himself records the story of conflict between two mortally opposed Destinies that split the world asunder. A hugely entertaining work of great daring, wit, grandeur and excitement that confirms the role of Belgarath the Sorcerer as one of the mightiest fantasy creations of the century.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Marvellous Prequel to a Gripping Epic, 29 July 2000
By A Customer
This book provided a brilliant end to the Belgariad and Mallorean (even though it is a prequel you should read it after you have read the other books) and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It tells the tale of Belgarath right through his life (seven thousand years or so)and is very hard to put down once it has been started.

I suggest that anyone planning on reading this book should read the Belgariad and Mallorean first, not because Belgarath the sorcerer is difficult to follow, but because reading this first may ruin these two series as it gives quite a lot away (only if you plan on reading the belgariad and mallorean. If you don't want to read either of them then feel free to read this on its own).

It's a great book. Well worth 5 out of 5.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Eddings' at their best, 3 April 2000
By A Customer
David (and now Leigh) Eddings are two of my all time favourite fantasy authors creating a realistic and believeable characters and dialogue (a rarity in fantasy books.) but the endings have always been anticlimatic and predictable when compared to the epic sweep of the stories.

Belgarath aviods falling into this trap by being a prequel and having a number of small peaks rather than one gianormous one which coincidently showcases one of Eddings' best characters (perhaps because he is based on Favid Eddings himself?) It fills in a number of holes in the back story of Old Wolf while still managing to be an excellent book in its own right. My only real complaint is that it throws up a couple of continuity gliches and a word of warning this book contains some pretty big spoilers for both the Belgariad and the Mallorean so read them before hand then read this and the even more impressive Polgara the Sorceress.

4.0 out of 5 stars I found this book both entertaining and enlightening., 5 Oct 1999

Belgarath the Sorcer : the story of belgarath and how he became what he is.

If you havent read any of the belgariad series i would suggest that you do so now as the book can be quite hard to follow if you dont.

out of all the prequels i have read this is the most entertaining and the most readable. The story is complex at times but not at others. I have read all of the Mallorean and the Belgariad. I would recomend this writer to anyone. He has a certain style of writing I have never seen in any other Fantasy Writer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Addictive
Other than Tolkein and a brief affair with Pratchett, my only foray into fantasy reading. Addictive - be careful there's a large set and you'll have to read them all.
