Product Description

Product Description

"Signs of Life" is a book for anyone who has ever wondered whether pulling that lever would really summon the guard or just pour gravy on the driver's sausages, a hilarious compilation portraying one man's crusade against a world of senseless public notices and warnings. Bored with his interminable commute, and frustrated by the mind-numbing tedium of staring at the same pointless signs and official notices from his seat on the 7.34 from Brighton (facing the bin and the emergency fire extinguisher), Dave decided to do something to brighten up his journey/life. What started out as a bit of personal amusement soon became an addiction, with hundreds of spoof road signs, warning stickers, and council order notices being stuck up around the country. 'Click heels three times before pressing button'; 'please give up your seat if frank wants it'; 'to summon the four horsemen of the apocalypse, please pull string provided'. From shops to roadsides and offices to hotels, Dave Askwith's witty and cutting 'art' is his futile but highly amusing gesture of dissatisfaction with the most woeful public transport system in the world and the inane protocols and rules of modern life.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hmm ..., 11 Mar 2006
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It was truly very funny, and was worth the money i paid for it.

However, books like this don't take long to read (i spread it over one single day, that was the longest i could manage), and after you've read it, you will rarely want to read it again. If you know someone with it, borrow it instead of buying your own copy. You will enjoy it just as much, and save yourself a fiver.

5.0 out of 5 stars You need to buy this book, its brilliant!, 4 Jan 2006
A friend of mine passed me this book one evening and said 'check this out!' within the first 10 pages i had tears rolling down my face and my sides hurt from laughing so much! Askwith and Normanton's stroke of genius is a surreal and purile ride through train carrages, backstreets and municiple areas of town, highlighted by some very amusing and orignal send ups of the public notices that nine times out of ten we ignore because......well, we've heard it all before havent we?
If you look at life with your tounge planted firmly in your cheek or you just dont take the world around you too seriously, this book is right up your street. to some though it might just come across as very silly and glorifying vandalisim.
My advice is buy the book and leave it on the coffie table and i garentee that everyone who picks it up will have a good laugh - and you will never look at boring public notices in the same light ever again!
this book is a gem 10/10

4.0 out of 5 stars Very witty satire, 6 Jun 2006
By William Burn "gingerburn" (Nottingham, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This is a little book of photographs, whose only text is to be found within the photographs themselves. There is no explanation offered for the project, which is described only as "thoughts" on the back cover.

What the book does, in truth, is very archly subvert and satirise the signs with which we surround ourselves every day, and by which we measure ourselves. It ranges from the surreal to the plan offensive, but there are many, many moments of sublime humour.

In all, very very funny. Your guests will love you for it.
