5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful bedtime story, 21 Jul 2005
I hate to have to re-use a word from the synopsis but really 'endearing' is the best word to describe Russell the sheep and his long-suffering froggy friend.

I've recently bought this book for my two-year-old son and he's fascinated by it. Russell the Sheep is a beautifully and humorously illustrated book. There are plenty of details to point out to a child (or for a child to point out to a parent) and all the familiar rituals of bedtime are portrayed by quirky but sweet sheep characters - bedtime drink, cleaning teeth, and so on, though granted the sheep who's putting her false teeth in a glass may be new territory for many toddlers! The text layout is interesting with spirals and curves of text reflecting the illustrations, and would entertain an older child, and the language is fun. The storyline is simple yet engrossing, while the starry skies and muted backgrounds of the dreamlike illustrations promote a soothing bedtime atmosphere. I've had some trouble finding books suitable for bedtime because so many are too garish and stimulating but Russell the Sheep is absolutely ideal.

The topic of what insomniac sheep do to get to sleep isn't new (my son's other favourite bedtime book is the equally beautiful When Sheep Cannot Sleep by Satoshi Kitamura, which I also highly recommend) but in my opinion there's no such thing as too many gentle bedtime stories.

5.0 out of 5 stars Russell Rules!!!, 29 Jan 2006

Quite simply, a marvellous and delightful picture book that enthralls and enchants children. I teach English, as a second language, to Spanish 8 year old's. They not only found the exquisite illustrations captivating, pointing out so much of the fine detail that I had failed to pick up (even after several readings) BUT they quite simply LOVED the story. I proposed to them that we do it as a short play, Drama if you like - to which there was an almighty "SIIII" My only problem now is trying to find one Russell from my class of 26! It's a wonderful yet simple story, superbly and deftly composed that I look forward to Russell's further adventures. Do you and your kids a massive favour and GET THIS BOOK!

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect bedtime book with wonderful funny illustrations, 20 Mar 2007

A great bedtime book with a wide awake sheep and a predictable story line, in that of course Russell does go to sleep at the end. The magic of this book is the wonderful illustrations with fluffy wide-eyed sheep doing funny things. Just like a child with his little frog sidekick, Russell tries to sleep in a variety of silly poses, tries hat over eyes, woolly coat off (showing silly spotty undies), counting stars, before the inevitable sheep counting. The story is simple, gentle and appealing. The lovely cover is similar to the lesser book, Marvin wanted more (with its vomiting sheep, Marvin). I'd choose Russell any day of the week - make that every day of the week.
