I was recommended some other Portuguese-made dictionary by my university, but decided to stick with good ol' Collins after finding my Spanish dictionary to be extremely reliable.

I was wise to do so, It's just what I needed.....and the others on my course are complaining that certain obscure words aren't even in theirs!

This dictionary also has plenty of examples of words being used in context, which is particularly handy.

Portuguese-English dictionaries are few and far between, and almost all are of poor quality. Generally, Collins makes up for any such gaps, with its very good range of bilingual dictionaries, but sadly that is not the case here.

As a professional user (translator), I find the dictionary far too small to be of use as a stand-alone dictionary, and in fact I use it as a back up for one of the Porto Editora range. In this capacity it serves a useful purpose, and can surprise with some extremely good translation suggestions.

Its main drawback for anybody working with European Portuguese is its Brazilian bias. The introduction claims that the book takes full account of both Brazilian and Portuguese vocabulary, but this is simply not the case. Even some of the more basic Portuguese words are rendered only in Brazilian, the writers apparently unaware that the word would be a complete mystery to a European. The overall impression is that the writers have never set foot in Portugal. This is not something to instill confidence.

Bearing in mind these caveats, it is a fairly useful, if limited, addition to your library, but it is not all it claims to be.

As far as dictionaries go, this one is quite good. It provides entries for all the words you would use on an every-day basic and there are phonetic transcriptions beside each word. Some key phrases are included but I think they probably could have included a bit more. Also, there is no guidance to writing in different registers which can be found in some dictionaries, plus it isn't set out in a very visually pleasing manner(rather dull- completely black and white). Appearance aside, it is a dictionary worth having as there isn't really anything better on offer. Ideal for those who have a knowledge of Spanish and have now taken up Portuguese.
