5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent dictionary for GCSE, A-level or IB study, 17 Jan 2006
By 100wordreviewer - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
This dictionary is aimed squarely at school students. It includes:

- for German nouns, the genitive and plural;
- a table of German irregular verbs
- a note on the German spelling reform (Rechtschreibreform)
- text boxes explaining concepts which do not easily translate, eg "Ossi" and "Praktikum"

Weighing in at 2,000 pages, the dictionary is a handy size for a single-volume reference work. The printing is clear and the explanations of words written in sensible, modern English. All in all, a fine all-purpose English-German/German-English dictionary.

5.0 out of 5 stars A thorough German English dictionary, 23 Sep 2005
By A Customer
Yet again when in the need of a good foreign language dictionary I choose Collins. This is a very thorough dictionary, and while flicking through I discovered words in English which I never knew before!

It's very complete, and very accurate, and the few central pages have some helpful pieces; there is also a very decent verb guide.

Certainly worth buying.

3.0 out of 5 stars ambivalent impression - worth a closer look, 19 Aug 2005
By A Customer
According to the German partner and distributor of publisher Collins, Langenscheidt, the bilingual âCollins German Dictionary - complete & unabridgedâ, 5th edition, (which I abbreviate in the following as CGD) contains approximately 350,000 words and phrases together with more than 530,000 translations.
I compared the CGD with another similar-sized dictionary (abbreviated as X) which according to the publisher has a similar number of keywords and translations. To do this, I checked the translations for maybe two dozen words. Those checked in the English-German section were mainly such, which I came across upon reading an US-American magazine. The words looked for in the German-English part were mainly such, which occured to me for a couple of different reasons. Furthermore, I compared the first pages of the German-English part of those two books with each other and with a third dictionary (abbreviated as Z), which according to the publisher has somewhat less headwords. To this third book (Z) I will return at the end of my review. In comparison with Z, I found for the CGD :
(1) The âCollins German Dictionary - complete & unabridgedâ (CGD) seems to be, in general, better in the German-English part but worse in the English-German part than Z. âWorseâ means - in both parts -, that fewer translations are given, and, more or less often, also quite common meanings are not given. It also refers to the presence or absence of headwords - however, the differences in the selection of the headwords seems less, or less important, than the differences between the given translations.
(2) The CGD contains, in contrast to X, a âlanguage in useâ section with examples e.g. of phrases for different purposes, of letters, curricula vitae, and the like in both languages.
(3) It might be - however this may not be true - that the CGD contains in general somewhat less or less extensive remarks about the use and character of the headwords and their meanings - e.g. may distinguish less sharply between American and British English.
(4) In the CGD the fonts of the translations are smaller than in X.
(5) The CGD is somewhat thicker but smaller in the other dimensions than X, and is thus more handy and allows being hold in one hand while leafing through it with the other at least for not too long periods and middle to large hands.
Finally, I found, that the allegedly somewhat less comprehensive third dictionary (Z; according to the publisher with more than 320,000 words and phrases, and 520,000 translations) appeared to be on the pages checked - the first pages in the German-English part - more comprehensive than both the other dictionaries, i.e. it apparently contained more different headwords, however, maybe less phrases - which I have not compared.
