'Band has an engaging straight-forward style' The Times 'Band knows all there is to know about the history of the mountain, its climbers and the politics behind their attempts' Guardian

Product Description

Published in association with the Royal Geographic Society, Alpine Club and Mount Everest Foundation, this totally engrossing history, brings you all the dangers and triumphs of the attempts to conquer Everest. The book puts the first successful ascent into context -- detailing the adventures and deaths on the north face pre World War II, and the planning after the war that was nearly curtailed by a Swiss expedition in 1952. Written by a member of the original Hunt team -- George Band (who went on to climb the lower but much harder peak Kangchenjunga and has been more closely associated with mountaineering than any other team member) -- the book contains details, photographs and material donated by team members and the RGS, much of which has remained unpublished. Written by a team member, illustrated with a 32-page colour plate section and fully supported by the Alpine Club, RGS and Mount Everest Foundation.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excelllent first hand account from a man that was there, 24 Feb 2006
George Band was the youngest member of the team which first achieved the summit of Everest. He has written a fascinating and well researched book which is illustrated with a large number of plates from the Geographical societies private collection and many photos from his friends. He begins by tracing the history of the exploration of Everest, the valient attempts on its summit and the noble failures. He illuminated my mind to a history I did not really know and gave me an insight into the cultures and pervading politics of this area of the Himalayas during these early attempts. He brings to life the characters involved and gives a great sense of empathy with there actions. His section on Mallory and the forces that drove him to risk all for this mountain really let you understand what can drive a man to risk all he loved for the sake of a mountain. Of course the book really comes into it's own when he writes on the successful summiting. His first hand account has a much more personal edge than any of the other accounts I have read. You really get the sense of the comaraderie that must have existed between this group and a real feel for how much of a team effort this was. The last couple of chapters of the book look at later efforts on the mountain and goes into reasonable detail on the new routes achieved and the major tragedies and successes that occured in these later years. At this point he loses the personal element of the book and you do not feel quite in touch with the later mountaineers. They become newspaper clippings rather than fully fledged people and therefore you are not as emotionally attached to their success or failure. This is however a small quibble as overall the book is excellent, a very accesible read and amazing well written.
