Product Description

The Spectator, 23rd July, 2005
It's implications and parallels are as sadly contemporary as anything in Buchan or Fleming - and rather more realistic. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Daily Mail, April 22nd, 2005
A powerful thriller...(Banks) brings disturbingly alive the history of the Stalinist terrors and the brutal Nazi persecutions that followed. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well researched - took me to another time and place!, 29 Jan 2006
By A Customer
This review is from: The Forest of Souls (Paperback)
A powerful and moving novel that brings the brutality of life in occupied Eastern Europe starkly to life. In addition to being an excellent read, it gives insights into a fascinating period of European history, which many readers will be able to relate to through the experiences of family members or friends. If you enjoyed Joe's War by Annette Kobak, then you will appreciate Forest of Souls.

5.0 out of 5 stars Compelling and evocative - a must read, 6 April 2006
By A Customer
This review is from: The Forest of Souls (Paperback)
This is an excellent book. It's a gripping, complex read and it's very original - I haven't read anything quite like it before. The story is set in the present day with a strand that runs from the first part of the 20th century to the 1939-45 war. It's about the way the events of the last war still reverberate in the present day.

I think it has one of the most atmospheric and most scary openings I've ever read in a crime novel. A woman is searching for papers in an old library in a derelict house. She finds a diary that relates to events in Belarus in the last war, and her find triggers a murder.
The diary links back to an old man, Marek Lange, who was a refugee from the war. He has been haunted by some terrible secret for most of his life since the war. His granddaughter, Faith, tries to protect him as an investigative journalist starts sniffing around. And as the book goes on, Marek's terrible past starts to unfold in a series of stories that run through the book almost like folk tales. By the end of the book, the murder is solved, and Marek's horrifying secret is revealed. The action moves from present day Britain, to present day Minsk, and back into the past into the secrets of the Belarusian forest. It's evocative, hauting and gripping.

One of my reads of the year.

4.0 out of 5 stars Highly readable, 18 Aug 2006
By Kate Blogs "Kate" (Yorkshire, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Forest of Souls (Hardcover)
An enjoyable read, I particularly enjoyed the inclusion of the old Russian fairytales, cleverly reworked to relate the history of certain characters. Good use of research helps to lend an air of authenticity to the novel. My only criticism would be that a couple of loose ends were left dangling at the end, but overall this is an interesting and well written book that is well worth a read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gripping story written with intelligence and clarity
This is a book which tumbles the reader right into terrifying fairy stories and the awful past of eastern Europe last century. Powerful and wonderful at the same time.
